Back up camera - switched or auto when in reverse

Installing a back up camera Friday ( Accele RVCLPMB - http://www.crutchfield.com/S-PububRJX284/p_074RVCLPMB/Accele-RVCLPMB.html ) and am wondering if anyone has theirs set up with an on-off switch in lieu of just when the truck is in reverse. I often haul cars and I can think if times that I would like to see what is behind me other than when backing up. Or is it possible to have it both ways? If you have a switch can you recommend one and the placement of it.

Are you connecting it to your factory head unit? Or an aftermarket? I have a Kenwood head unit and it has a button on the front so I can turn it onto the camera while I am driving. And it will still change it when I put it into reverse. If your head unit doesn't have this option then I'm not sure you could do this. Only other way is to wire it into the reverse input and a video input. Then change in to video in to see camera while driving but you will not have music.

Actually, after asking this the other day, I discovered that my unit has that option. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/DVD-Receivers/AVH-X3500BHS

 

However, the installer who installed it had problems with even getting the camera to work while in reverse and never figured out how to wire it so the "camera on while driving". Two guys spent 5 hours installing it and still didn't get it right.

What is the wiring harness you are using? The wiring harness should have a reverse wire connection. Connect the reverse wire on the radio to that wire. That's if you have the right harness.

You could use a SPDT switch in the power feed (reverse) to the camera.

Hook up the center/common terminal to the power feed to the camera.

Hook reverse feed to one of the remaining terminals.

Hook up 12volts (hot in run/acc) to the last terminal.

This will allow you to choose camera ON only when in reverse or camera ON when ever you flip the switch.
