A/C is acting weird. Any suggestions?

I have an 01 8.1L with 120k.

When I turn the Ac on max. it blows warm. The clutch on the compressor kicks on for about 7 seconds and turns off and then back on after 7 seconds or so. The low-side coming out of the firewall seems like it is trying to get cold but when it passes the nut between the low-pressure and high-pressure the line is like room temperature. I'm guessing where that nut is thats where the orifice tube is? The AC worked great last year and hasn't worked at all this year.

What do you guys think?

Low on refrigerant. Have it recharged and check for leaks.

alright ill do that. Guessing i need to go buy a die kit or something? Also how do I drain the remaining freon?

Need to use an a/c machine that can remove the remaining refrigerant and recharge to proper level. Definately not a do it yourself job for most people.

Go ahead. Just stating that most people dont have the tools or knowledge to do so. Im all for saving money and doing work myself.

Except he cant post his pressures because he doesn't have a set of manifold gauges or a/c machine.

It's very clear you don't have any idea about how to work on an a/c system or have the correct tools. You don't drain r134a and and a dye kit isn't going to do you any good.

You clearly have a leak somewhere lowering the system charge. It needs to be taken to a competent shop that can recover whats left, vacuum it for awhile, find the leak and repair, then recharge to the proper amount.

This isn't a do it yourself job, and don't use a/c leak repair because most shops will tell you to get out if they find it in your system when you inevitably take it in for repair.

The short term "fix" might to just recharge it with one of those $30-40 diy recharge kits. You just hook it up, pull the trigger and it fill it up. That might keep you going for a while, depending how big the leak is. Does it fix your leak? No, but depending how long it lasts it maybe good enough for the short term.

well I bought a can of freon with a gauge on it from the local auto parts store. When I hook it up with the ac on max the needle goes down to like 20-30psi- and then back up to like almost max psi on the gauge. Goes back and fourth when the clutch on the ac compressor kicks on and off.
