Higher Wattage Fog Lights

Recommended Posts

I have a 2006 Sierra and I just bought new off light bulbs for it. The stock ones were like a 9140 and they were 45 watt. The new ones I got are made by Cipa and they are the EVO lights. They are a 9005 high beam bulb because Cipa doesn't make a 9140. With the higher wattage, should I be concerned? Is it going to melt wires or do any damage? Or can I just run them. Thanks.

I'm running 9006 (55w)in my fogs for over a year. The amps being drawn is a bigger concern than the watts being consumed. Run with them.

Right. And this is kind of off topic for this post but I have the same Cipa lights in my low and high beams, and They pull 85 watts compared to the stock ones which are 55. Should this be a concern? Sorry if these questions are stupid but I'm just wanting to be sure. Thanks

I would be concerned. You can also think of watts as heat, the higher the number the hotter the output. I would reconsider 85 watts.

Um, the two are the same thing. Watts = amps x voltage

With vehicles, we're always talking about 12 volts, so you can drop that variable from the equation, so watts=amps

If wattage goes up, so do amps, and vice versa.

I almost agree. It's not a linear change and the voltage is not constant therefore you can't drop that variable.
