Silverado Dual Fog Light Mod

Recommended Posts

Hey I've seen some pictures of other members doing custom installs on silverados with 2 led fog lights. Can some of you guys who have done this post some pictures of how you achieved this and which lights you have used? Any information would be much appreciated.

IF I can find some time when I'm working on the truck this weekend I'll try to write up a little how-to on this. For somebody familiar with mods it is a VERY easy task and intuitive once you start. I'll see what I can do...for those interested, because I was, you DO HAVE TO CUT the factory fog light bezel in order to get the (4) cubes setup correctly. Just something that may or may not make some of y'all's decision

I think Ridgid is coming out with a kit for 2014+ silverado very soon. They had it on their FB page.

Yup it's listed on their "COMING SOON" page. I'm going to hold off for that and their DOT/SAE D series lights to come out.

My buddy has the Rigids and they are without question brighter than my knockoffs, but nowhere enough you justify the price for me. I have less than $100 in my entire setup. I tweaked on it last night and took some pics of the install. I'll put something together today or tomorrow on a "how-to"

Ok here it goes…

Materials Used

$80 (4) CREE LED Flood (Spot not available from this seller) Cube Lights. You must use the 2x2 Led Row Version in order for them to fit. You WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE 3x2 LED ROW VERSIONS

http://www.ebay.com/itm/301051421972?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

$9 Factory Fog Light Female Plug to HID Male Adapter (Pair)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181559573988?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

$6 Canbus Error Canceller (Pair) Most likely not required but for $5 I did it just in case

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321486119460?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

$0 I already had some male HID plug leads so I didn’t need to buy any. But here is an auction

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Pair-Universal-9006-9005-HB4-Male-Pre-wired-Connector-Plug-Harness-HID-D2S-D2R-/261548528142?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3ce581d20e&vxp=mtr

$5 (2) M8-1.25 x 50MM Bolts from Home Depot + (2) generic mounting plates

$100 TOTAL spent on the project

Remove the upper radiator plastic cover (several plastic clips), remove the upper bumper cover (4) 7mm bolts, 2 per side, and several clips to release underneath, remove the grill (8) 10mm bolts.

Unclip the factory harness for the fog lights and parking sensors (if equipped, same plug regardless) underneath the bumper.

Remove the bumper with (4), 2 per side, 18mm bolts up top and (2), 1 per side, 15mm bolts underneath.

Remove the metal fog light / bumper mounts. (6) per side, 15mm bolts.

Remove the fog light mounts. (3) per side, 7mm bolts.

Remove the actual lights with (3) Phillips head screws within the yellow plastic clip things.

20141121_110741_zpsqgocanz0.jpg

You will have to trim the fog light plastic bezel approximately ¼ in on each side. The lines below are for reference and not exact. Just measure 3 times, cut once.

I forgot to take a better pic of the bezel trim but at this point you just need to play around with it until you can get the lights mounting flush and pointing straight. The blue lines are parallel to the fog light housing back, which is pretty close to parallel with the headlights. The way it is designed you can't get the fog lights (yellow lines) to be perfectly parallel with the blue lines but you can get close. Plus for me I wanted them aimed slightly out anyways for better lighting off the road side on back roads etc. Try not to let the fog lights overhang the red line as it will not look as clean of an install. With them tucked behind the red line it looks much more professional.

For mounting the fogs the inside one can be bolted through the factory fog light mounting hole using the longer extended M8-1.25 x 50MM bolts. On the outside light you can use the bolt that was provided with the fog lights and just run it through the generic mounting plate and tighten. The fogs wedged in there are tight enough so the bolts are just reassurance so don’t over tighten them.

20141120_194839_LLScopy_zpsb270f9d7.jpg

The rest is pretty self explanatory, all the wiring just plugs male to female except for you have to wire up the lights to a male HID fitting and the rest is plug and play.

I got them aligned pretty good, the output lines on the ground are identical

Fogs With DDM Tuning 5000k HIDs in Stock Projectors - the on the ground pic doesn't look like they match very well but the looking into them pic is a better take on it. The color matches very well

how long did this take you?

I'm sure someone has tried but I thiught maybe it's worth asking. Would the previous rigid fog light mount with the dual D2 work? The openings look to be about the same size to me. I haven't put a tape to it. Maybe I can measure my dads 08 tonight for reference. I want to do this and don't really want to mess with making a bracket or fabing something up especially if they are about $70... Yeah it's somewhat expensive but in the scheme of things it's not bad. Just a thought I had.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Fred's favourite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. To Fred's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. Fred was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
