2003 8.1 2500hd fuel level issues

So this truck hasnt missed a beat...62K miles.

 

Fuel pump quit. Dealer installed new and replaced the dash cluster that was acting crazy (that was a recall back in 2007-2008.

Gauges are all good and same readings as my digitals except fuel and

Got truck back 1/4 tank.

Added 8 gallons. Shows 1/4 tank. Right back to dealer he says "fill it up and it has to relearn bla bla.

Ok it reads full and is going down with use as usual.

 

Before I go further....let me say Ive never taken a vehicle to a dealer for service. EVER.

I do all my own because frankly they do piss poor work and do more damage than good.

(Dents, grease everywhere from dirty hands.....they dont give a Sh!t.

 

Anyway being winter and no garage to jack up bed or drop tank and being I have warranty I figured what the hell.

 

Mind you my fuel light came on before at 15 miles range and Fuel low DIC as well.

 

Exactly would be 2 gallons in tank. 24 to fill.

Yesterday......dies at light. No fire. No gas light on and 17 miles on DIC and about 1/8+ tank left on gauge.

 

i was ready for this..... Im not a fan of dealer service.

So I had my 2 gallon can of gas ready.

 

Dumped it in gauge same spot. Cycled key once and fired right up.

 

Today showing 1 line of fuel 16 miles left. NO warning light.

 

Tap tank from bottom. GAUGE drops to Red, DIC shows 11 miles. No warning light.

Cant be but a gallon in there.

 

What did they screw up or not fix right? Didnt calibrate it?

 

Im not buying it has to relearn anything BS.

 

1. Either its a junk module or sending unit,

2. STICKY float.

 

Any ideas? Or do they need to calibrate that with the pump the same way they programmed the new gauge cluster with the miles and hours?

They don't program a fuel pump ,

 

Floats don't stick ,

 

Tech has to be a complete moron to mess up a fuel pump install,

 

Idk what to tell ya except buy a scanner

Thats what I was thinking except the gauge cluster was replaced at the same time and they do have to program the miles and hours into it.

 

Its Almost like the pump and float readings arent kicking the DIC to read right or trigger"low range" and the fuel light. Or the sending unit is bad.

Are they seperate? It worked fine before.

 

Right now its down at the bottom of red with Range 10 miles.

 

It never showed that prior. 15 was lowest and light and DIC came on.

Float is sticking. Each line denotes about 1.625 gallons of gas.

 

Put in 2 gallons even. Gauge didnt budge.

 

Tapped tank gauge jumped up and so did appropriate range on DIC.

 

Is it common for dealers to fix one thing and break 5 more?

 

Do they not do this on leased rigs knowing in 3 years they will have someone walk in hand them the keys and say take this POS?

 

What about luxury vehicles. Maseratis and Porsches? Or even high dollar 4x4 crew cab trucks?

 

Do they go in for an oil change and come out Mazdas and Pintos?

 

I was really REALLY hoping they could fix a simple thing right the first time.

 

Is there anything to this " it needs to relearn its levels etc" BS like the computer learns driving habits?

Speaking of Alberta....a buddy up there works in the oil fields.

New Dodge Cummins. Takes it in for free oil and filter change.

 

While there they bled brakes and topped off.

 

2K later he checks oil. This is all dirt roads and dust and mud.

 

Pops hood, no oil cap....its sitting in a tiny area covered with dirt.

NO brake reservoir cap either. Gone.

 

Hes suing dealer for a new truck.

He said " I don't know why I didnt check their work this time"

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
