2000 GMC Sierra 2500 tapping noise

my 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 6.0L has a tapping noise coming from the left side of the engine. You can't really hear it from under the hood but if you climb underneath it you hear it loud and clear. The engine has 229k miles on it. Regular oil changes. I use penzoil high mileage 10w 30. Also the truck runs like a champ. Oil pressure is normal. It just has a loud tapping noise. Listen around the bell housing of the trans. Could be a cracked flexplate. Been there, done that. If the sound is right off the front of the trans, that could be your culprit.
