Coating it like that is going to make it worse and increase your air intake temp., not a good idea.

 

If you don't like the look of the air tube, coming up with your own measurements is probably the best thing to do. All aftermarket air tubes sre damn near identical in appearance.

 

A home made aluminum ceramic coated air tube will not perform better than any plastic aftermarket tube. It's your truck though so have at it.

 

$40K + pickup, why not bulid frankenparts and hope they work.

 

People here know what they are talking about and are only trying to help. It takes more than bending scrap aluminum and adding coatings to make a goid intake tube. All of the best performing tubes are plastic.

I guess you had to put in your two cents as well. I guess you didn't read it all I bought a high temp wrap to put around it.

Yes, it is my truck and I'm not very impressed with it at all.

 

Guess since it's on the internet must be true since people know so much on here when they can't even follow a simple direction, when I just asked for Specs off one and turned into this hellish trend. Have a nice day.

I'm curious to see what you made and I think you should still post it. As a frugal modder myself I'm intrigued. Honestly when it comes down to it nothing is going to make a huge difference in regards to air tube schematics. The biggest difference lies in the air filter. I assume what you and I have both done is basically for looks or for sound.

I remember making a curvy flat to round inlet duct for my airplane from fiberglass. A friend that was building a LongEZ showed me this trick. It looked like a vacuum cleaner attachment when finished, except it was nice smooth transitions.

The process was pretty simple. I cut out an aluminum flange for the bolt on end out of thin sheet metal and drill the four holes to mount it along with the center duct hole. I roughed it up good with some really large grit paper, then took a piece of urethane foam and carved it to the shape of the inside of the duct. The flange is lightly glued on a board covered with silver duct tape. The foam form is glued to the board in the hole of the flange. Fiberglass (or carbon) is laid up wetted with resin on the foam form and blended to the flange. When it's hardened, you dig out the foam and sand it smooth inside with a 1/4" steel rod, split at the tip and sandpaper inserted and run in a drill or die grinder. For a smooth inside finish, you can shortcut some sanding by brushing latex rubber on the outside of the foam form and spraying with mold release.

 

Of course, the truck duct doesn't need a flange. But you get the idea. It's a simple and fast way to make any shape of duct you want. You could even copy an Airaid MIT this way if you took some time.

 

To establish the shape of the duct, you can make a simple cardboard pattern and draw on it, then cut it out, then check on the truck. You then lay it on the foam sheet/block and mark the foam to the pattern and cut out the foam to the shape. Then round the shape of the duct foam form along the length.

You can glue pieces together to make thick parts. It sands super easy and shapes very easily with knives and sandpaper. You can literally make the form in minutes.
