If it were a small number of drivers not checking tire pressures I can understand being pissed at someone doing something about it. But, when it is the majority of drivers not checking pressures, and those same tires blow out, causing injuries in the ensuing crash, someone has to step up and do something.

Lots of evidence of what happens when tires are run at too low a pressure(most recently the Ford/Firestone combo) to convince the public that maybe someone needs to step in.

 

It would have been better if we all did what we were supposed to be doing all along, but, humans have this thing about being told what to do. Enthusiasts tend to perform "pre-flight" checks, too bad they are a very small minority of vehicles on the road.

 

Manufacturers could have stuck with the ABS monitoring rotation speed difference between wheels to detect pressure difference, but, that could not account for all tires being low. Tire pressures vary considerably where I am throughout the year. Air temp will go from -35C to +35C in under 5 months. Tire pressures are just like your blood pressure, by the time you let fate tell you about it, it is too late.

good point Doug. The neglence of individuals affecting innocents. my solution is a bit more radical, the standards for getting a drivers license need to toughen up in hopes of prospective drivers having more respect before getting behind the wheel.
