Chimes volume on '03 - good news and

Maybe some of you out there already know this, but I missed it if it's been posted earlier. The good news about the "chimes" is that I found out how to change the volume.

The bad news, unfortunately is that it has 2 settings, "normal" and "louder". Well so I go and change it, hoping against all odds that mine is set to the "louder" position, but no it's set to the "normal"!!

Well, when you cjange the volume, it test chimes away in the "louder" setting and hurts! Don't try it.

Anyway, FWIW here's how you change it - ignition to "on" position, radio off, then press and hold the radio preset #6 button. It will then indicate (in my case) "normal", then press and release again (I think) and it goes to "louder", AKA Concorde on emergency take-off maneuvers.

I'm know this works for the Bose systems, including the 6-CD changer variant, but not sure about the other head units.

Man, I wish they had a "low", read somewhat painful setting, rather than what it is.

Same here. I read through my manual and noticed the procedure on how to "lessen the pain", so I also was hoping mine was set to loud but it was on normal. Normal for who? Deaf people?

It seems like Chevy did some unnecessary changes to the driver signals...

I haven't driven one, but from what I've seen, the high beem indicator is way too bright and the chimes are too loud. Don't have these problems in the 2002...

If you have the Bose radio in an 03 then the door chime is amplified through the speakers and is loud enough to be painfull on the lowest setting.

What other magic can be performed using the freakin' radio? I got the feeling that #### thing is more computer than stereo. Won't be long we will all have to take a class on how to crank the truck!

I agree, I also am under the impression that it is more of a computer than a radio.

The other day I got really annoyed at the chimes and pulled out the radio. I systematicly removed one pin at a time from the back of the radio, hoping to find the "control" lead that tells the radio to chime. There was only one wire that disabled the chimes, but unfortunately, it disabled ALL audio from the radio (PINK WIRE). The radio would still turn on and play CDs but no audio. There is a weird dynamic voltage on this wire. I'm guessing is a data line of some sort... Will bring out the oscilliscope next time.

One day I will win the battle of the ear piercing chimes...

There is some very interesting reading in a couple of the documents at GM's Techlink site. Browse through the last 10 or so issues that have been published since the 2003 trucks were being built. One of them even talks about when you turn the radio off - it isn't off - it simply quits playing music. This is so it can communicate with the rest of the vehicle and still play the chimes, Onstar etc. One also talks about how, at least for the Bose version, the radio has to be programmed to know whether it has been installed in a pickup, a Hummer, or other vehicle. This tells it what type of tone and how much output for each speaker - so you get the Bose certified sound.

One of the weirdest things I've read - I think this was just for cold climate trucks - but if you crank the starter for .4 seconds the computer takes over and cranks the vehicle until it starts or a predetermined amount of time. It may have been listed in one of the bulletins - but people complained because their truck would crank after they released the key - if it hadn't started.

Lots of interesting tidbits in these documents - as well as - the bulletins at the end of each one - keep you up to date on problems found with the trucks - and all GM vehicles for that matter.

Yes the H2 does this. Very strange the first time it happens!

Funny you bring that up. This morning I stopped at the convenent store. When I restaqrted the truck I bumped the starter, usually all it takes to stert it, and the starter kept going for a couple a seconds (until the motor started). It sounded very strange, like the starter had hung up.

It amazes me what I pick up on a timely fashon from this site. :thumb:

Well, one of my buddys finally got fed up and ended up cutting the wires to his driver door speaker, there is still a little bit of chiming comming out of the rear left speaker, but it is an acceptable whisper.
