VIN issue due to motor swap

Hello all. I am sort of in a bind here. My 06' Silverado started off life ad a V6 2WD, the previous owner transfered cab onto a Z71 frame to make it 4WD, and swapped in a 4.8l. He did a good job on it but my problem is that because he used the whole harness and PCM from truck that motor came from, when you plug in to computer for inspection purposes it reads a different VIN than what is on the cab and registration. It obviously is giving me the VIN from the truck that the motor and harness came from. So the problem is that I can not get it inspected because it looks like I'm trying to use some other trucks inspection sheet for registration purposes. I called regional DMV office that deals with re-VIN process and they told me that I could not have it re-VIN because of the motor swap issue. I don't really think that is correct so I am asking for your advice in this. I live in NC and my county requires emission inspections. I was trying to sell/trade truck but now I can not due to this issue with VIN, I am moving soon to KY and pretty sure I won't have to deal with the emission issue. But for now I am still.looking to sell or trade truck and this is a major hold up. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

Question, Are you saying the VIN is stored in the PCM ? or just the wrong engine data ?

Do you have documentation on the work done? They may require some proof that the VINs are legal.

You should be able to have the VIN info changed in the PCM via custom tuning programming or similar method.

I don't have documentation for motor swap or frame swap. This truck has been priced together from at least two different trucks. The motor and trans from one, the frame from another unless there I'd a 4.8l z71 model I've never heard of. And the interior is all leather dark gray, yet the headliner and visors are tan. No carpet due to a vynil floor install,(which is awesome). The dash is from a 2500 model. I asked about if a dealer could install Vin in PCM biy was told that its not possible.

The computers can be reprogrammed. But if you reprogram the computer with your VIN you will be programming a V/6 engine into the engine management system. Every VIN has a digit that tells you what engine is installed and controls the engine management for that engine. You can go from a V/8 to a V/8. But its hard to go from a 6 to an 8 or vice versa. And that is the reason the DMV gave you the answer they did.

Custom tune sounds like the solution

In don't think the Vin can be changed with a custom tune. If the dealership can change it I would have to have a new one assigned to it first. But so far I'm being told I can't have one assigned to it. I hoping someone here will have better information on this

So can I just have a V8 VIN assigned to the truck and have the PCM programmed to that VIN? Seems like an easy solution.

The VIN number that is on the plate that is attached to the Dash board is the one that has to be programmed into the computer. When the inspection station do the inspection they either scan the VIN plate or on some older systems they type the VIN number in their inspection computer. That number has to match what is programmed into the computer and also match the VIN number on the registration.
