Welcome to the board...I have had my truck a little over a year, and had a Ford before that.  There was a ford site just like this one (f150world) and I knew there had to be a GM site out there somewhere...then I stumbled across this one about 2/3 months ago.  This has been the best thing thats happened to me since the internet...it is an unbelievable resource for anything you need.   :chevy: As for your question...I am about 80% sure only the dealer can do it, although I'm sure if you were to get a hold of the steps required to program a remote you could do it yourself.  Again, welcome! :)

here you go

Transmitter Programming

Important

All transmitters which are to be recognized by the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR) must be programmed in a single programming sequence. If the system is placed in program mode it will erase all previously programmed transmitters upon the receipt of the programming signal from the first transmitter. Up to four transmitters can be programmed. Do not operate or program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are in the keyless entry program mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.

You may program up to 4 transmitters, using either of the two following procedures:

Transmitter Programming Procedure (Method 1 - No Tools Required)

Close all the vehicle doors.

Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.

Press and hold the door unlock switch.

While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.

Release the door unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.

Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one transmitter. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.

Repeat the previous step to program up to four transmitters.

Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter mode.

Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation.

Welcome.  I'm glad someone else remembered the answer, because I didn't write it down.   This is the question that brought me to this board about 2 years ago.  I don't post as much as some people, but I'm always around...

Good luck with your truck.

The only flaw to that trick is you have to have a extra remote........  Un-fortunatly that translates to 89 bucks for the remote. :)

Guess I will live with my 2 although I would like a 3rd as backup.

I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to say thanks to racer. I got an extra keyless remote off ebay for $8 and your instructions to reprogram the remotes was flawless!

Thanks man!

Do you already have to have keyles entry for this or can you add it. I have power locks but no remotes. If I bought the remote could it be programed to work? Anyone know?

The FCC ID has to match.

Even a 4-button remote will work as long as it has the right FCC ID.

As for adding keyless entry, it can be done fairly easily.

If you're lucky, your truck is prewired and all you have to do is add the keyless entry receiver (it goes above the back of the instrument cluster, have to pull the cluster to get to it).

You might have to get the BCM reprogrammed (or cheaper, buy a BCM out of a fully loaded truck off Ebay).

Even if your truck is not prewired for it, it's just 3-wires to the keyless module. +12V (hot at all times), ground, and one serial data wire that goes to the BCM.

I followed this procedure awhile back and it worked great. I got two remotes from my mom from her new suburban to use on my Tahoe since I only got one remote with my Tahoe when I bought it and it was in bad shape. Anyway, the new remotes work great. However, when I am at my parents house and I disarm my alarm with her old remote, it disarms my alarm and unlocks her suburban. Then when she disarms her aftermarket alarm, the stock horn honk goes off. It is quite funny actually.

Anyway, just thought I would share.

Guys..just bought a 97 GMC Burb SLT w/ keyless entry. It doesn't have the horn or lights hooked up from what I could tell, tried the procedure for hitting the lock button twice and nothing. Could I have the factory alarm set up installed to update this system? Or should I go with a aftermarket alarm system?

Thanks, Joe..peace <*)))><
