2-3 Upshift Clunk

Hi Forum - thanks for all the great info. I've read alot about the 2-3 upshift clunk that is present on my 2002 LS Tahoe.trans

I hear that the Nickle plated yoke will solve the problem. But when I read the service bulletin on it, it says...

"During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer case. This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted."

If it is the yoke, should I have this replace immediately (at 11,000 miles). Or should I wait until just before the end of warranty to have it done. Will it damage anything if I wait?

Thanks for your help,

Walt

Welcome to the site...hopefully it can provide you an unlimited resource of information like it has done for me. My silverado has the 2-3 upshift clunk as you described, and because the TSB said no service should be performed, I didn't get it fixed. I already have the nickel plated slip yoke, and it still does it. The new slip yoke fixes the driveline clunk problem, which most people say happens when taking off from a dead stop. Hope this helps.

I had the nickle plated yoke installed on my 02 Silverado extra-cab, and it took care of I'd say 95% of the 2-3rd shift ckunk. Mine was getting so bad that it was clunking on the down shift as well. Very pleased with the replacement. I say go for it now. :smash:

You might as well go for it. I had the nickel plated slip yoke put on mine at 10K miles and the squeak hasn't returned yet, although I understand it will eventually. It only takes the stealership 30 min. to do it. Make an appt. and wait it out.
