Trailer rating

Hey guys,

I've tried searching this and have gotten mixed reviews. Is there a sticker on the 2016 Silverado 1500 that states what my max trailering capacity is? Is it the sticker located on the bottom side of my hitch or some other spot?

Thanks for the help.

There are a few factors that play into what your tow rating would be. From motor size to rear end gearing. As long as you can get these figures you would be able to find the ratings on the gmc or Chevy website.

What I can see from you avatar is that you have a 6.2l cc. So you either have the 3.23 or 3.42 gearing.

The 3.23 is rated at 9100 lbs

The 3.42 is rated at 11700 lbs

Most off the lot trucks are with the 3.23 unless you specifically have the max towing package and an easy way to tell is if you have the extendable towing mirrors from the factory. This should also be listed on your window sticker.

The transmission also plays a role in the rear-end gearing. I heard that the 6 speed trans with the 3.42 is equivalent to a 4 speed with the 3.73. They are also trying to pull better fuel economy out of theses things while keeping the tow ratings up and that comes with compromises.

man i wish we could still get 3.73s

Is it as simple as changing the gears to 3.42 or 3.73 and a Tune to adjust for the new gear size in order to get that higher tow value?

Just curious

Max tow package also includes (JL1) trailer brake controller, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning for increased control, heavier duty rear springs and increased RGAWR

It would depend on if you have the trailer brake. My 2015 denali came with the trailer brake but did not have the 3.42 rear gearing. There may be a larger trans cooler with the max towing package but not 100% on that. But in all honesty if you are looking to be able to tow up to 12000 lbs I would consider a 2500 duramax. Better to be safe than sorry in the long run.

Yeah I don't need it right now, but it would have been nice to have. I'll eventually get a 3500 for my business and call it a day. Most of what I tow will be under that 9100 but there have been a few times where I needed to tow closer to 10,000. If I had the higher rating I could sneak by a little longer.

Trailer brake can be added as an without the rest of the NHT (max trailering) option. NHT will include the JL1 trailer brake option and Z82 trailering equipment.

Trailer equipment (Z82) can be added without trailer brake (JL1), but JL1 requires Z82.

Z82 Trailering equipment, includes trailer hitch, 7-pin and 4-pin connectors

JL1 Trailer brake controller, integrated

Z82 is standard on higher level trims. JL1 will still be optional.

I've got the trailer brake integrated and the hitch plugs. Only thing I don't have is the suspension and gears. I've actually got King shocks on all four corners now. It looks like from the sticker my truck was originally set to have 3.42s and a 5.3l but with the addition of the 6.2l it dropped my gears down as standard equipment for the 6.2l. Truck also has the Z71 package.

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
