2014 Silverado rust through paint

I ***did*** mention that the OP's problems were possibly brake dust, (right up there with rail dust in the same sentence). ;)

 

You might be able to remove the spots with a "cleaner wax", but unless you chemically remove the iron particles they'll come back. And working on a huge truck like ours you'll end up with bleeding stubby nubs where your hands used to be before you get any real paint correction.

 

Buffing is good... just don't be nuts and go crazy with it. As for damaging the paint and having it fail because you buffed it.... unless you're using a rotary buffer and a heavy cut wool pad/heavy cut compound combo.... you'll never see that happen.

 

Well kept, well maintained, clean, sealed paint will last as long as the vehicle.

 

I'd suggest investing in a Griot Garage GG6 DA buffer. You can order them from places like Autogeek (or any of the other myriad of Palm Beach Motoring Group companies, OR.... Advance Auto parts and tack on a 30% off coupon, getting it down near a hundred bucks. FWIW, Autogeek will match the Advance coupon code if you ask them. ;)

 

Then you'll want to pick up a dozen Lake Country pads, say 6 orange, 4 white, 2 blue. While you're at it, grab either SMAT based compounds and polishes (Meguiar's) or DAT based like from Menzerna and you'll be set for buffing.

 

Do remember with SMAT based they cut really well, really fast, so you don't work those products but 4~6 section passes and make SURE you don't buff that product till it dries out. Where with DAT based products they cut well the first pass and continue to diminish (break down) after each and every pass. Which means with those, (say Menzerna Heavy Cut 400) you'll want to work it all the way through it's cycle, (which can be 8~10 section passes.

 

One more thing... make sure you have AT LEAST a couple dozen quality microfiber towels, at least 360GSM units will do. Autogeek calls them Gold Plush Jr's, but they are PROUD of them. Instead... try Ian out at Microfiber Tech in San Diego. He sells the same towel at less than half the cost. (If you order a 180 count case at wholesale pricing you can get them (shipped) for around $1.25 each.) That SURELY beats 3/$15.95! ;)

 

I'm such a sucker for good towels though... what with a good 400 or so around here. LOL
