Painting under body white

Anyone ever paint the underbody of their truck white? Plan on grinding some Rudy off then painting it. I figured white would brighten things up underneath for when a person is doing maintenance under there. Thoughts?

I think it would look nice.

 

But if you drive it, it will get dirty and how much time do you want to spend cleaning the bottom of your truck?

White would be cool because you could easily see what if grease/oil has flicked somewhere. It could also help you see what you are doing as you mentioned.

 

When you say "paint," are you talking flick (rattle) can or activated automotive paint? If it is not activated then it will stain very easily since it does not have hardeners to make it truly chemical resistant (hardeners are why your paint does not peel when gas drips around the filler neck). If you are going to flick-can it, you could still use activated automotive paint but it gets tricky -- an automotive paint supply store can activate a flick can, but I think you have <24 hours to use it. Also, automotive paint is finicky and will not adhere worth a crap if the underbody is not prepped (scuffed, completely grease/oil free).

Well we undercoat out trucks up here so she'll be thick with oil once I get her back together. Speaking of paint, rpm, I was just going to rattle it. I'm not set up for proper automotive paint.

 

However thinking of this, I kind of half planed to por15 the underbody. Actualy I plan to. To get away from the lack of hardener as you mention, do you think implement paint would suffice? Or tractor paint. What ever you call it. I restored an old Ferguson and work her in to woods quite often, things full of oil and does not seem to be peeling. I'll have to post some pics of what I'm doing to the truck. Just got the front end bolted back together today as I had is all apart for paint.

Will, Tractor paint does pretty well. I use it on shelves that i keep chemicals on, and under the stall pad that is on top of one of my benches. It will fish-eye a bit if the surface is no fully prepped, but as long as you leave the first coat to cure (instructions per coat) it does much better on the additional coats. Brake fluid will still eat through it, and solutions like Simple Green will leave stains if not wiped off, but other than that it looks good.

 

Not sure how careful you can be around the body paint, but if you can brush/sponge/spray toilet bowl cleaner (like blue Lysol or similar) and then undercarriage and then scrub it with a stiff brush it should pull a good amount of oils out of whatever is on the under the pan. Toilet bowl cleaner has some acid in it which makes a great cleaner (and aluminum brightener) but it can be hell on stuff that you do not want it on, like paint, if you don't get it off quick.

Rpm, I've never thought of that. Seems like a good trick, as there is a lot of grease that has to be removed before I do any painting.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
