Can you put the original stock trailer break in any of the Silverado instead of putting a custom one that just hits your knees?

requires a massive amount of additional componentry, so, essentially, no..

I believe you would need the correct harness for starters. Also requires programming of the bcm I believe. It has been discussed many times here search it and you will find out an aftermarket one is your best choice. Also the gm one Dosent even come close to being as good as prodigy one.

As mentioned above you need harnesses (dash/chassis) trim panel, switch, relay, and module, then the BCM would need to be programmed for it, GM will not give out program codes for a truck not built for it due to possible safety issues.

I had a customer in here a few years ago that argued with me that he could add it, so he ordered everything he thought he needed, I told him the parts were non-returnable, and he would be on his own for the installation as our service dept. wouldn't attempt to install it, he came back in a few months later and "tried" to return all the parts!

This is kinda funny to me, my father bought a Dodge Ram 1500 without the integral brake controller and they installed it at no extra charge as part of his buying the truck...works flawlessly.

So Dodge will install the factory controller without question and GM won't? Safety repercussions aside, it's still the owner that is responsible for the equipment safety regardless of what's installed (no different than installing an aftermarket controller in the same truck).

The factory deal is like a BrakeSmart controller, which is brake pressure driven...I've owned a Prodigy, the factory system has several advantages over the Prodigy in my opinion, and not to mention the pucker factor experiences I've have had from using a Prodigy.

I wouldn't consider a Prodigy if the factory controller was available...

Dodge offers it as an accessory add-on I would assume in that case, GM does not, GM's policy is that if they do not offer it as an accessory they do not want us adding it due to liability, I understand the owner "should be" responsible for any added equipment, and I agree, but unfortunately these days the way everyone is so "sue happy" you have to play it safe.

It's the factory installed controller, not aftermarket...but I get what you're saying. But what is the difference, a brake controller is a brake controller.

Such a popular addition, that right there would keep me from buying a new GM truck without one installed.

Yeah I understand its the factory controller, I just meant that they offer it as an add-on accessory, GM does that with quite a few things as well, such as remote start or navigation, they just didn't set-up the trucks to accept the factory controller if not already equipped, I thought when the new K2XX trucks came out they would do so, but that obviously didn't happen! Our GM here orders all HD trucks with the factory trailering package, which includes the integrated controller as part of the Z82 package, as well as most of our 1500's are ordered with it as well!

I'm going to have to disagree with the gm controller being better than a p3 or p2. The prodigy's are inertia controllers which I find to be superior.

Yeah, until you're on something slippery and you don't have any inertia to activate the damn thing.

Had a PRODIGY installed in the last truck, had a loaded trailer push me through a flipping red-light because the PRODIGY never engaged the trailer brakes!

It might work fine if you're a fair weather driver, not if you have to trailer in any weather.
