2001 Silverado Coolant and Oil leak

Trucks been losing Coolant for some time now with no noticeable leaks on ground or in engine compartment. Got under truck today and saw this around the oil drain plug. Any ideas?

That looks like an oil leak, possibly from your rear/main seal.

Can't remember if that's the location for the fly wheel access hole. Check inside to see if oil is dripping in there to firm up rear main seal leak.

 

On the coolant leak, if you can't find a leak, then it is getting consumed. Both of my gm's (01,04) have consumed about 4oz every 500 miles. Must be genetic problem.

Would it have anything to do with Freeze Plugs?

well that depends on if you have been in very sub freezing temperatures with a weaksauce coolant in the engine cooling jacket. i could but doubtful.

 

check the orings on the oil cooler block. check your oil pan.

 

use a flatblade to pop out hte inspection cover (circular thing) and look up into the rear main area using cell phone light.

 

on mine 2006 6.0 it was a combonation of:

 

oil cooler mounting gasket leaking

oil pan gasket leaking

oil cooler line up at the rad leaking.

bleh.

 

 

and i had coolant leaking from the water pump gasket.

 

search amazon for UV dye that you put into your crankcase (same place you put the oil) and drive it for a few days.

 

use the uv pen flashlight that comes with the kit, with the yellow glasses and you will see where the leak is coming from.
