Brake controller advice

I just bought a 2500HD, CC, SB, 8.1L Allison. I noticed that the truck comes with a plug under the dash for a trailer brake controler. What, if any, brands are out there that I can just plug right it, or install with ease?

I'm not real sure about the '03 HD's, but on the '01-'02 trucks, there was a pigtail that was in the glove box, or that was supplied by the dealer for the trucks that had the towing package.

 

The pigtail plugged into the fuse block behind the E-brake (top row second spot from the left). The wires on the pigtail, had to be spliced in with the wires on the brake controller, and the "maxi" fuse needed to be installed in the electrical center under the hood.

 

I would think the procedure would be the same with the '03 trucks, except I believe some people here had to switch 1 wire on the 7-prong plug on the back of the truck for the brake controller to work 100% correctly.

 

I hope this is enough info to give you the idea, and I'm sure an '03 owner will step iin and give you the rest of the details.

A co-worker just bought a new 2003 1500 with factory tow package and he did not receive the brake controller pigtail and the 7 to 4 adapter. I received both in the glove box.

I received both on my '02 as well. I have mine soldered to my brake controler, easy in, easy out.

They don't come with the 03. The wiring is different from 02 and 03. The difference is the blue and brown wires are reversed in the pigtail. Switch them and it works perfectly. I did that on my 03 with the pigtail from my 01.

I shamed my dealer into giving me the pigtail and the 7-4 adapter for $10. I know it cost them more than that, but they couldnt give it to me for free, and I specifically asked about it when I ordered my truck.

 

Most places you can get the brake from can get you the harness, or at least the parts to make it.

If you want a good brake controller, I would pick up the Prodigy from Tekonsha. No Leveling, 2 Boost control settings for "natural" braking. For only 7 dollars more it comes with the wiring harness that plugs directly into the electrical box under the dash. If used mine for 9 months now and it works great.

I have the Prodigy and would recommend it. Just make sure you buy the pigtail meant for a 2003. You'll spend more time figuring out where you want to mount it, than installing it, it's that easy. :jester:

 

If you're pulling a travel trailer, you'll also need to buy a fuse to replace the orange plug in the fusebox under your hood. Otherwise, the battery won't charge while you tow it.

I back the prodigy I have it.. or any other Tekonsha product will do good get at least a two axle controller I have a 4 axle controller.

Can you tell me more about this fuse I need to change? What do I need to do, install a higher amperage fuse? Please advise.

It isnt a fuse you are replacing, its a blank. Open the under the hood fuse box on the drivers side. The top left blank (I think its in the stud 1 location) needs to be replaced with either a 30 or 40 amp "fuse". It isnt a regualr fuse, its a goofy looking one. Best bet is to go to a parts store, open the hood and take out one of the goofy looking fuses from inside the box, and go inside and buy some spares.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
