Plasti Dip Chrome of GMC Emblem, Keeping Red

I have seen only threads about people plasti dipping (or covering with vinyl) the GMC emblem covering the red area and keeping the chrome. Personally, the less chrome on my truck, the better. I have a matte black 2016 Sierra ATX and I think the red goes good with it.

Has anyone plasti dipped the chrome and kept the red area exposed?

Picture attached I thought I would just take some left over matte vinyl I had and wrap the "C" quick to see what it would look like with the red exposed and chrome covered. I like it. I might go this route with my emblems.

I did this with my chrome on the outside of my "GMC" logo. Only difference is, I wrapped my letters with black carbon fiber.

That looks sharp! Great job.

Dipping the chrome should be easy. You kind of have two options: One is to just spray it all and peel off the red parts after. It should tear pretty cleanly on the lines. The other option is to use green painters tape, but the pin striping stuff, and cover off the red, leaving just the chrome exposed for dipping. That's my 2 cents on the dipping method.

I recommend the following:

1. Take off the emblem

2. Use a dremel on the back side of the emblem and pop the letters "GMC" letters out

3. Plasti-Dip the chrome (all of it, that way you don't have any edges that can snag)

4. Use glossifier (If you want a glossy finish)

5. Put the letters back in (I used 3m automotive tape)

Take your time, you'll be much happier with the results.

Also, I attached my first attempt, which was without popping out the letters. I peeled it off and redid it. I have been through the automatic wash about 10 times now with no issues.

Bought some Plasti Dip and first time using it and I LOVEEEE the "GMC" logo now. This stuff is awesome. For the AT emblems, I attempted to score and peel the red area and it didnt come off good, so I will have to mask off the red area and try again.

Finally got one "All Terrain" emblem to come out good with the Plasti-Dip. So I ended up spraying the whole emblem and then buying a wood burning kit from Lowes and using a "hot knife" to trim the red area to remove the Plasti-Dip from it. Genius!! ?

Finally finished the back "GMC" and all the "All Terrain" emblems. Love how they turned out. Next is taking off the front grill and spray the other "GMC" emblem and the front grill.

Center out great. I tried to do the same but had issues. But didn't think of using a wood burning kit to do that. Great idea!

Onto the front grille. Pictures are my BEFORE and disassemble of the front "GMC" emblem and black chrome looking pieces to get Plasti-dipped.

"GMC" emblem (chrome area) and bottom piece Plasti-dipped. Top piece is the stock black chrome color. Middle is in the process of getting sprayed. I think it looks good so far and adds durability to the pieces. Some of them had small nicks.
