Trans Temp?

Recommended Posts

I bought a 2003 GMC 2500HD w/ the 6.0L. I will be towing a 8000# trailer and was wondering where the trans temp should be? Just normal unloaded driving it sits just a hair above 150. On my short (5 mile) drive home (after buyng the trailer) The trans got up to almost 200, Is that normal?

Thanks,

Jeff.

Mine usually sits around 150 as well (but its a '91 with a 180° tstat) The highest I hit was 180-190 while hauling ~1 ton of gravel. I would expect it to rise to 200 or so this winter when she starts really pushing, but cannot advise beyond that.

I have the Allison transmission, so this might not be a good comparison, but in "unloaded" highway driving it runs around 130-150. Pulling a load in tow/haul mode (about 11,000# of RV and boat) it will move up around 175 degrees on the highway. (This is all summer temps, mostly in the 70's to mid 80's.)

In slower suburban driving mine runs perhaps 10-15 degrees warmer.

sonomazq8, your trans temps sound completely normal. Getting to 200 in 5 miles might have just been due to the trans being brand new. 150* around town is completely normal.

You'll find your tranny will get the hottest when towing and in stop and go traffic on a hot day. The highest my tranny has even been was 210*, and that was towing in stop and go traffic. It usually never gets much above 180* though.

just in case

i'm putting a b&m super cooler in place of the small stock

mine too runs in the 200 on hot days and when towing

this should pull me down a solid 10 -15 degrees

i'll let you know

by the way this cooler has threaded inlets and only needs a couple

of reducing bushings at napa to accept the quick connectors from]

the factory setup. I.E. quick change

OK, let me ask you guys this: Whats the best way to route one in conjunction with the radiator cooler? Should I run the radiator first then the aftermarket one?

Yes, if you use both, it goes to the one in the rad. first. Do not allow the temp to remain above 200°! The more above 200° and longer it remains above °, the quicker you'll ruin the fluid and damage the trans.

Look at your owner's manual for your vehicle's GVW. Add the weight of what you tow and increase that number by 30-40% for the minimum size cooler you'll need.

b&m supercoooler did the trick

i can't get this thing to get above 155 now

best 70.00 i've spent in a while and it only took about 45 minutes to put in

BTW its been in the high 80's to lo 90's here lately
