97 350 Vortec cam offset setting

Hi, I've got a 97 Silverado w/350 vortec & just did new intake gaskets. I have the distributor set close enough so it runs pretty decent but I'm getting the P1345 code. My cheap scanner won't give me the cam retard setting & I've been trying to find a scanner that will at a decent price but getting mixed answers on some units. I was told by some that the Innova 3160E would give that reading and even called the company which wasn't any help.I would appreciate any suggestions as to what unit will work. Thank you

Snap On & Autel scanners will do the reset but can be pricey,my suggestion is to take it to a reputable shop and have them do it.Might cost you $50-$75 but it's a lot cheaper than buying a scanner.

I'd throw a timing light on there, after marking the position of #1 TDC **COMPRESSION** on the harmonic balancer (if it isn't factory marked) - make note of where it's at right now, and just play around with different settings.

 

Will take quite a bit of trial and error, but I think you can get it. You'd have to clear the code, turn the key OFF for 10 seconds or so, and restart to see if you've got it. If light comes back on, try again. If you marked the position of the distributor housing before you removed it, you should be able to get it back playing around like this.
