Tailget cables

2000 Silverado, 40K on the clock. Opened the tailgate today and both cables broke. At the point where they broke you could tell that the cable was waiting to break any day. Is there a replacement better than factory cables?

From what I've gathered about this problem, it's due to the cable being enclosed and water getting trapped in there and causes it to rust and break. Mine did the same thing. I bought two new ones from JCWhitney and put some oil in the cable and then put silcone caulk on the ends to keep water from getting into the cable. So far so good. Chris

I know Pep Boys sells them. I think the price was fairly cheap, under $10. I don't know if they are any better than stock.

Mine on the '98 Z71 broke last week, bith of them at the same time too. I just thought it was an isolated case, but it sounds very common now!

well i droped a piece of 2 3/8 pipe and it broke both of the cables onto my ranch hand bumper and put two nice little dings in my tail gate not alone the scratchs from the diamond plating. i think chevy should replace them. i am not happy about my tail gate.

early 99-00 trucks had tailgate cables that weren't properly sealed at the ends allowing water into the cable. The GM replacement cables will run you about $18 at a dealer and are sealed properly

Mine didn't break they streched and the aftermarkets wern't the same size so I have one longer than the other. Am going to get them from the dealer.

Mine both died at the same time as well. I put No-ox in mine and then capped it off with silicone. I did make an ass of myself sitting on the tailgate at the time. Put a small hair scratch in the tailgate from it coming down on the bumper.....
