Fuel gauge always shows empty

I just recently bought a 96 GMC Sierra z71 and the fuel gauge always shows empty. Right now I'm just resetting the trip odometer bit I would really like to have a working fuel gauge. Any input would be appreciated.

Possilbe fuel pump and sending unit, just had this issue with mine and replaced the entire assembly, $170 bucks and a friend to help me get the bed off and it is working correctly now.

That's what I was starting to think to. I'm replacing the entire bed soon so I'll probably just do it then. Thank you for the input.

Although I have a Sierra, I haven't had to mess with the fuel pump yet. I know on the 1/2 tons the sending unit is a seperate little unit on the side of the pump and can be replaced separately.  although you may have to get one from a scrap yard. I seem to recall it being difficult to order the parts for the sending unit without ordering the entire assembly. But it only takes 5 mins to replace once you have it out of the tank.

If it is the same in tank fuel pump unit as I have in my 97 1500, I would never condemn a fuel pump for a sending unit failure. If you have good fuel pressure and no fuel pump problems, just the gauge issue, I would keep the pump going and  replace the sending unit. Just my .02
