Ignition Won't Turn

My 2009 Sierra has suffered from the GM Jiggle for a while now....some days better than others.  Today, after spraying some lock-ease into all my locks, the ignition refuses to turn.  I'm hoping it's just a worn key.  If it's NOT the key, what is the best way to handle it...replace ignition, lock cylinder, something else?  I don't know what all parts are involved.

I have replaced many ignition locks. Its not hard. You just pull the covers off of the steering column, and unbolt the lock cylinder. Then bolt up the new cylinder, and you are good to go. 

 

EVERY vehicle is different.Some take 15 minutes to do, and are incredibly easy.  Some vehicles require that large rivets be drilled out to remove the tumbler, some require a re-learn on the security system, some require other weird stuff to be done like re-programming.

 

You best bet is to watch several Youtube type videos to see what needs to be done. I will try to add some helpful links and pics.

Spraying lubricant into a lock has mixed results. 

 

10% of the time it has no effect.

 

70% of the time it helps. 

 

20% of the time the lock ceases to function. 

 

 

For ignition locks, you should never wait. Any problems will continue to get worse. They need to be replaced (at most) 1 time in the life of the vehicle. The new lock will last longer than you will own it, so you might as well swap it out at the first sign of trouble.

My truck is still at work 55 miles away from home. If I remove the lock can the ignition still be started so I can get it home to work on it properly?

I doubt it. You probably have a security feature that prevents the vehicle from being stolen in that fashion. You could remove the lock cylinder, and run a bypass on the ignition resistor, but that may just complicate the issue. I have done it, but it takes time. Do you have AAA road side assistance? They fix locks and security features for free. 

 

Here is another option: 

 

Remove the lock, "de-key" it, and put it back into the vehicle. Then you could start it with no keys. Only problem with that, is that you normally need the correct key in order to open the lock housing. That's were AAA comes in. Or you could use a grinder to open the lock housing.

Got a ride home and back to work. The original key I had stashed at home works great with absolutely no jiggling required. WOOHOO

At least it's not the ignition.  I ordered new keys.
