YANK Torque Converters

I stumbled upon this website the other night, and thought it looked interesting. www.converter.cc Anybody every heard of YANK before? They seem to make some quality stuff, and noticed that they had several kits for late model Chevrolet trucks. I personally am not very interested in changing out my stock converter, but thought that maybe some of you would be interested.

4yrs ago I got a Yank TC for my 98 Z28. After install, in Park and rev'ing the engine there was a vibration between about 1200 and 1600 rpm - more of a nuisance than anything, but I did wonder about engine longevity or effects under hard throttle. Others had posted on www.ls1.com that they also had a vibration. Mike (I think) at Yank said there was a special installation procedure where you had to slightly tighten one bolt, spin the TC, tighten next, spin, etc, etc, in order to keep the TC from being seated crooked.

My high perf mechanic said there was a boss or something that stuck up slightly which kept the TC from fitting flush with the flexplate (I think), he said the TC was originally designed for a different type tranny or something (but, Yank does/did sell a "stock" type TC but it was limited in its torque multiplication - I presume the "stock" type TC housing would bolt up fine). Some of the posts had said Mike had traveled to some install sites to perform the procedure himself. My mechanic said it should have bolted up like a normal, stock TC - he tried reinstalling it but the vibration remained.

I returned the TC and just went back to stock, no vibrations. I have no idea if these problems remain with Yanks latest offerings. I must add that Mike at Yank was very good to work with, and I would recommend or do business with them again (although it's been 4yrs so I really have no idea what they may be like now).

Yes, good company, pretty good product. I would rate ownership an 8 of 10 experience. Vigillante (PI) would probably be a 9 of 10 for about 15 or 20% more $$$$.
