2500 or 2500hd

We have a 2500LD. That has they heavy duty features. It doesn't have the power bulge on the hood but does have the big 14 bolt FF in the back and the HD 6.0 exhaust system a little different than dad's 99 GMC K2500 pickup that George has. So I possibly think you could have HD underpinings. Is it two wheel drive or four?

Depends. If it is the old body style, it is the "heavy duty" version, which is not the same as the "new" 2500HD. The 2500HD didn't come out until 2001 model year in the new body style and is essentially the same as the old body style, lowest GVWR rated 3500.

There was also an 8600 lb GVWR 2500 available in 2000 in the new body style, which is basically the same capacity as the old "heavy duty". Most 2000 2500's were the 7200 lb GVWR variety though.

In 2000 what GM had was:

1500 - 6100 - 6400 lbs GVWR

2500 "light duty" - 7200 lbs GVWR

2500 "heavy duty" - 8600 lbs GVWR

2500 "heav duty" (old body style) - 8600 lbs GVWR

In 2001

1500 - 6100 - 6400 lbs GVWR

2500 - 8600 lbs GVWR

2500HD - 9200 lbs GVWR

I wouldn't worry too much about what the model # is, the GVWR rating tells you how "heavy" a duty the vehicle really is.

2500 LD here......... NO dealer would do GM employee deal

on a 2500 HD when I bought in 01. No rebates either !

Plus the LD had a $2500 rebate AND 2.9% interest.

But the LD had all the goodies I needed to work that puppy!

Snow plow prep, locker, trailer tow pk, PYO wheels and all

the power goodies to boot !

Best thing ONLY $ 32,200 sticker ! Minus GM discount, rebate,

etc.........Heck the HDs on the lot were $35k and up!........geo

For NBS look on the sticker on the door frame:

8600 GVW = HD

HD has larger rear axle and one more leaf in the spings. HD also has the upgraded transmission to handle the additional weight rating. C6P should also be one of the RPO codes on the sticker in the glove compartment.

I thought that in 2000 if you had the new body style 2500 it was a LD truck (non-9200 GVW). The Old body style was still available in 2000 and I think it was available with the higher GVW and also the 7.4L engine.

The new body style trucks with the HD option came out in 2001.

Check your placard inside the drivers door (like was earlier mentioned), and you should be able to figure out what you have...

I have a late 2000 3/4 Ext Cab 2500HD 4x4. Even says so on the original window sticker. No markings on the trim, but definitely rated for 8600 GVW. Think all of the late 2Ks were designated as HDs; in 2001 they did get a bump to 9200 and they were build on the one-ton frame.

If my memory is correct the regular 2500 not HD was rated for somewhere around 7800 GVW, with the smaller rear axle and one less spring in the back. Again check the RPO code in the glove box, that will tell you if it is the 8600 GVW rating.

The 2000's (new body style) were available in a "light duty" and a "heavy duty" 2500 configuration (7200 vs 8600 lbs GVWR). But both were 2500's not 2500HD's, which weren't introduced until the 2001 model year and had a 9200 lb GVWR. GM really liked to confuse things in the body style transition years between 99-01 with both old and new body styles in production at the same time. Just look on-line at a lot of parts catalogs and see how screwed-up some of the listings are for 99-01.

FYI...My 01 LD 2500 has the 8 bolt wheels and the 480le trans (according to RPO code in glove box) .............geo

I thought the 8 bolt wheels and especially the 480le was HD??? What is the Gross weight rating?

No, no. You're confusing HD "Heavy Duty" and the 'heavy duty' C6P RPO again.

In 2001 and later there is:

2500 - 8600 lbs GVWR (no light or heavy duty RPOs)

2500HD - 9200 lbs GVWR

In 1999 and 2000 there was:

2500 (light duty) - 7200 lbs GVWR (new body style only)

2500 (heavy duty) - 8600 lbs GVWR (old or new body style)

no 2500HD model

The 2500HD is the same as the old (pre-2001) 3500 with the lightest GVWR configuration.

Yes, GM is messing with our minds.
