Rearview camera operation question

I have a 2016 3500HD with a tailgate camera (RPO code UVC) that displays on a IOB headunit. I have a camper installed that required the tailgate to be removed. I'm shopping for a replacement camera to mount on the rear of the camper to replace the removed unit. I've found one at https://camera-source.com/automotive-cams/gm-oe-fit/2016-gm-truck-salt-spreader-camper-camera-kit.html that looks like it will fit the bill. My question is this, If I install this (or for that matter any factory connector type unit) and apply a 12volt signal to the white wire (see schematic above) will the camera display on the headunit regardless of transmission gear selection? There are times that I'd like to see behind while not in the reverse gear). Anybody else figured this out yet?

That is what you are instructed to do in the alpine install manual , so that you can see camera anytime
