Hood Wire

I was looking under the hood of my '03 Sierra 2500HD and noticed a wire going up to the hood from the firewall. What is the purpose of this being there is no light under the hood? I can't see a reason to have even a ground going to it, if nothing there.

It's probably a harness that they had laying around from an '02 truck... I had heard that the under-the-hood light was deleted for '03. I don't know if it was deleted on all models or just some of them. If it is still available on some models, then it is a universal harness, and probably just needs a fuse to make it live. I would hook a test light to it and see if it is live, and if it is , then I would put a light in there!!!

It is indeed a ground wire. All loose pieces of a vehicle are grounded to the rest of the chassis in some form or fashion. Helps against electrolysis which can cause some rusting at the connection points, and a side benefit, it helps against radio static as the hood bumps around when one hits bumps.

 

As far as the hood light is concerned, just do a search on this board. We banged on this subject a while back, griped, argued, and fussed. I even added my own, using a GM '02 light. Snapped right on in. Rather than rehashing the topic, just do a search. You'll find messages with install instructions, photographs, etc.

Thanks for the explanation on why that is there. As far as the hood light, I did a search and the only 2 topics came up was this thread and then another where someone was selling one. Nothing about adding one so I guess it got retired, unless I am searching wrong.

Thanks for the link, it also mentioned another thing I noticed too, the windshield wipers no longer lock open.
