BDBWTE Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Okay short and sweet. A family friend Bart... comes over to the shop today to borrow a trailer and the posi-trac to do some work around his house.. So I back his 2003 Dodge 2500 Heavy Duty 5.7 Hemi truck up to the trailer hook it up. Then I go and get the posi drive it on the trailer and about put the rear-end ont he ground... which you can do to any less than 2 ton truck you hook it to.. Of course I was mouthing him sayiing " d**n with my chevrolet I can push the bucket against the very front and it don't squat..." again I was just playing I can put my bumper on the ground the same as his truck.. but anyways.. So I chain it down and we talk and then on his way he goes. Well leaving the gravel driveway he gets stuck.. He puts it in 4x4 and lays into it again...PS the Hemi with Straight pipes...sounds very good....anyways even with 4x4 no luck he can't get out so me and some co workers decide quick fix is to jump up and down on his rear bumper to get him out well the truck manages to get on the road but somewhere along the way we heard a snap and then the truck was sitting low on the passengers side. Climbed underneath the truck and sure as crap broke one of the leaf springs right above the axle... Just thought that was kinda weird considering what I've done with my truck and how many times my springs have been negatived or frowning at you from the side and I've yet to break any...My truck sits lower in the back than a brand new truck but that's to be expected after you pop your truck's cherry... Just thought I would keep you guys in the know.
chevy38fan Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 first off, he's a dumb *** for putting straight pipes on it.. he lost ALL of his low end torque. second off, what's he doing using a hemi to tow something with anyways? and it also sounds like he shoulda gotten a 1 ton, instead of a 3/4 ton. (I've never heard of a leaf spring breaking on any dodges, must have gotten a bad spring??)
MCourson Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 second off, what's he doing using a hemi to tow something with anyways? Dodge seems to think that the hemi belongs in a heavy duty truck.

HillHound Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Climbed underneath the truck and sure as crap broke on of the leaf sprins right above the axle... Just thought that was kinda weird That is odd. Dodge's aren't known for weak suspensions so maybe it was just a defective leaf like 38 said. Just reminded me I did see a 99 to 02 style 2500HD at the feed store a few weeks ago with a bed full of bagged feed in the bed sitting low and real lopsided. Some guys were standing around and lookng under it. Something was broke under it too I'd guess but I didn't go over to see what it was. Maybe they don't make leaf springs like they used to.

They don't make springs like they used to I'll second that.. I broke a spring in my factory 2000 Z71 but I had a load and was kinda off-roading at the same time deals but still we've done that to other 1/2 tons and with more weight and never broke a spring... My buddy has a 2000 Powerstroke F-250 and we broke a couple of springs in his rear-suspension trying to pull a 410 Deere on a gooseneck... If the HD breaks a spring I will be bitching at GM hard core... I mean we've have some 80's truck that have done heavy construction their entire life and the springs haven't broke yet.. Relaxed a little but never broke...

(I've never heard of a leaf spring breaking on any dodges, must have gotten a bad spring??) I mentioned to him about losing low-end torque and asked if he suffer the same low-end torque loss I did when I was running straights... and he swears up and down that his truck has more low end torque... Bart is a Mason and uses his truck everyday.. Sold his 98 Cummins for the Hemi... Not the brightest Idea in my book but he got a deal and it's new so if he's happy then I'm happy.. He uses his truck almost everyday and so far, unti now, it's held up pretty good. He a pallet of block in the back of his truck that weighted 4,000lbs and he took it down the road no worries, pulls his 20' livestock trailer with it and has pulled some of our trailers when he need to borrow one.
HillHound Posted September 20, 2003 Posted September 20, 2003 They don't make springs like they used to I'll second that.. Wonder if all the truck manufacturers get general suspension parts like leaf springs from the company? Wouldn't suprise me if they do. Sort of like the way they all use or used to use Dana axles.

Good point... I noticed that my Z's spring packs said made in mexico on them when I took them to a local spring service center to be re arched and two leaves added..
