2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 rear end clunk!

I bought a 2019 silverado 1500 in February of 2019, theres right around 5 thousand miles on it.  Recently I have noticed a loud thumping sound in the rear end like a clunk sound when driving down alleys or uneven roads. I hear it when I back out of my driveway or pull into my yard. It sounds like a bowling ball is rolling around in my bed.  Anyways I took it to the dealership where I purchased it. They heard the sound and said there is a protocol that they have to follow.. first they clean the debris out of the leaf springs and grease them up real well. If the sound comes back which I know it will the next step is to replace the leaf springs.. Now from what I'm told and read that probably wont fix the issue either. I'm told it's just a poor design. What am I supposed to do? I'm making a big payment on a brand new truck and it sounds terrible. Why should I or anyone have to deal with this? Help me out someone!! Thanks!!

First off, not sure the HD section of the forum is the right spot for a 1500 issue.

 

Second.  Is your truck a NEW body style 2019?  Or an OLD body style 2019, aka "Silverado LD"?

I didn't realise this was the HD forum. But I'm sure theres alot of knowledge on here HD or not someone will have an idea! GM is currently working on a bulletin to repair it. There saying it's the leaf springs making the sound! The answer I'm getting is it's a poor design.. who knows! It's a 2019 new body style 1500

Check the flange on the yoke of the driveshaft.  We have had one truck that the weight on the flange broke and caused a vibration.

I just started having this same problem on my 19 trail boss Silverado. And I wouldn’t drive it I had it towed to dealer I only have 19000kms on it and they told me it’s normal I took videos and documented everything. In mine it feels like something to do with the automatic rear locker.

Hey Ryan my names Nick.  I have a 2019 Silverado I purchased used.  We just heard this same noise last night while backing out of driveway and turning out of neighborhood.  Initially we thought the kids left a ball or something in bed of truck and it was rolling around.  Did the GM dealer you brought it too give you a bulletin number or anything?

I am currently dealing with this issue on my 19 Silverado LD with 13,600 miles on it and it’s been in and out of service for the last three weeks. Leaf springs replaced twice and the rubber bushings installed, still having the issue. Got told by the dealership they won’t keep guessing what the problem is and throwing parts at it and that’s it’s a normal noise and it’s a truck that their all noisy.

I have a 2019 Silverado LT Trail Boss - about 24K miles and hearing similar sounds; only at low speeds, in and out of driveway, etc.  Haven't taken it to dealer for this sound yet, but checking suspension components and mine seems to be the spare tire making the noise.  When under the truck and pushing up on the spare tire, hearing similar/same noise...

I experienced the same noise. Had it in and out of the dealership several times. Picked it up today with a spacer inserted into the back of the leaf springs. See photo. Dealer says that this eliminated the noise. Chevy says that it's a known problem with the Colorado. I have a Silverado 1500 - 2018.

2019 Trailboss. Same exact issue, brought to dealer. Changed Leaf Springs and noice is still there! Just like everyone else. Such bull

I know this is an old thread, but my 2019 does the same thing. I had a 2017 that was doing the same thing, and actually fixed it before it was totaled out. What is happening is the leaf springs are shifting from left to right and causing the noises. My 2017 did not have the little brackets with rubber on them on the end of the lower spring, but my 2019 did, so I figured that it would not be an issue...but it is.

 

My fix was that I put two long U-bolts on both sides of the axle on the leaf springs. I didn't put a whole lot of tension on the bolts, just enough so that they wouldn't back out and still allow them to flex. This completely eliminated the problem and it was a pretty simple fix. I wish I had a picture to show but I guess I never took one.

 

So, if you are really wanting to get rid of the clunk, it is a fairly simple $30 fix. Might have to do it on my 2019 now also.

I had the same issue on my 2019 LD. This "repair" is what my dealer did and it fixed mine. No clunk now. I am concerned they seem to have removed the rear spring clip. Otherwise I'm happy.

      He has his dad’s newer truck he’s put away. He has several old cars he rotates between him and his family. I’ve seen a restored square body and a SS Chevy truck he’s sometimes drives. He did raffle off a new suburban recently. As much as he is watched if he drove new stuff as a rule we’d know it. It would be fine by me. I don’t care what people prefer. I got one more new one in me. I’d rather my wife get one. I can’t get her out of the Genesis. Don’t tell anyone. I want her to get an electric truck. I want to put a generator in the back. Just because. She hasn’t bit yet.

      Yes, you must have seen my thread on the Blazer. HOT GARBAGE, but I love them anyway. I'm convinced every car guy has a soft sport for an S/T series somewheres. Probably even a Panther too, if I'm being an honest car guy. That doesn't mean they aren't junk. And they definitely don't get better with age. I sometimes play with old cars, but that's by choice. I don't rely on them and they aren't my everyday fleet.   Derek plays the common man on Youtube and that's no doubt where he started. Now he has Youtube money (and Motortrend, etc). You think his crews and his wife ride around in old beaters when they're chasing him and his wrecks across the country? No he's got newer and nicer stuff for that, you'll see glimpses of it in the footage.

      You refuse to own anything made in this century yet you reportedly own... a 2007 Silverado, which is now almost 20 years old. The dissonance.... turn up your hearing aid?   You clearly don't understand the government contracting process, brother. We send people to die on front lines, keep the public safe, and make people's husbands, wives, children enter burning buildings with equipment from .....wait for it.....   ...the lowest bidder....   Just because something is used for a long time doesn't mean it's good. But it might be cheap and plentiful.   Please, continue to whine about new trucks in a thread dedicated to new trucks, which you've said you'll never own. We get it. Go tell everyone how you're stuck in time on a Panther forum. I mean, Jesus, an 86 isn't even one of the good Panthers.

      It really is comical when people don’t agree or see the reason some people prefer the older vehicles. They become condescending. All the while they may be busting their knuckles on old vehicles. I have found memories of swapping out engines in my old GM cars in a weekend without much hassle. Unlike today. One wrong move a computer will shut you down. Even on something as easy as a brake job. There’s a pretty comical YouTuber called the car wizard. A garage owner who puts it all in perspective. Another Vicegrip garage that’s shows just how tough the old stuff is.

      I was around and remember that era very well, so I'm calling b/s on that statement. If they were that bad no police department or taxi company would've bought a single one ... but they were used in both services (and fire) for DECADES. They were bulletproof and proven. Even the early 21st century ones weren't too bad! The early models were legendary.   Mine is proof, but people like atlas are blinded by agenda and refuse to believe facts right before their very eyes.   Even decades after they were built, a new generation started driving them, posting all their builds and shenanigans on Grandmarq.net and Crownvic.net. The failures would show up then, since they all were deep past 100k-150k miles by that point, and younger drivers tend to be a little aggressive, especially with vehicles than can lay a one-tire fire for as long as you hold your foot in it. They've more than proven themselves over the decades.   The only thing that'll really take them out is road salt. The bodies and sheet metal were garbage. A victim of the cheapout FoMoCo and GM have been partaking in before then, and since.   Today it's the stuff that counts - the undercarriage that rots away first!    GMs Caprice was no slouch either. Reliable as a stone ax - the opposite of what they build now.
