Straight Pipes?

I want to straight pipe my '01 silverado Z71 with duals out the back, my friend has this setup from the cat, and it sounds sweet. I want to do the sam thing but was wondering if it is bad on the engine and if it's illegal straight piped from the cat, just no muffler. Thanks for any input! By the way I live in NC, if that helps with the laws.

At least some 1 chamber Flowmasters to take out some of the harshness.

Is straight pipe legal, probably not. Most state laws require that you have a muffler, but they probably won't check unless you're too loud. Many states and communities are setting noise standards now and are setting up roadside noise traps. Unfortunatly the Harley guys with the straight pipes are what's causing the new noise laws, but you will get caught same as them.

Most traffic laws require a an OEM type muffler as equipment. Any modifications beyond that are letter of the law illegal. That said, unless an officer is really looking for something or you rattled too many windows, nothing will be done. The interesting thing about some of the Laws are that no muffler is required on a diesel if it is turbocharged, the turbo is technically considered a muffler. This comes from my experience in law enforcement in Texas and Louisiana, Not too sure about the states above the Red River!!!

The diesel does not require backpressure. The only backpressure should the turbo, and from the turbo out you want it as free flowing as possible to reduce your egts.

I believe the conversation went something like this:

cdhd2001 Posted on "Sorry. Last time I looked this was a GM Truck website. Unfortunately (for you), my diesel is a GM Truck."

Some times you have to read the whole post to make sense of everything. But I thought this fit in do the fact the original question was on straight pipes and he is running straight pipes.

I know some guys around here that have done it, and some of them sound terrible at certain RPMs. Not sure if it is pipe size or tip size or something. Not too many get pulled over here for straigt pipes, you just be mild on the gas when near the cops.
