Trouble with Hypertech

My otherwise stock 6.0L (2001 2500 HD) has been fitted with a K&N FIPK. This past spring I installed larger tires on an aftermarket wheel. I decided to get a Hypertech programmer for the new tire size and pick up some performance along the way.

When programmed at the 87 octane setting, I get severe pinging when I get aggressive with the throttle. With 89 octane, minor pinging with the programmer set at 87. I have not tried the 93 octane program/ gas. I called Hypertech on this. Their excuse was that I am flowing to much air with the FIPK, and that I should remove it and just use a K&N filter with the stock air box.

This sounds like a poor excuse to me, and I'd rather not dump my FIPK and then turn around and buy a new element.

I may also try to return the hypertech and try to find something better.

Right now I have returned the truck to stock tuning and all is well.

I need some help here! Thanks.

Try cleaning the mafs. Those with K&N's have had problems with the filter oil getting on the sensor wires in the mafs and causing pinging.

If you really want to make an improvement get a Wester's and sell that Hypertech!

I've never had any pinging troubles but I just have the K&N drop in not the K&N FIPK. I never run less that 93 in my truck either.Maybe go to the higher octane fuel settings and see what happens.

I have had the K&N FIPK and HPP3 on my 2000 5.3l for over 50K miles now.

I run 87 octane with the HPP3 set at 87 and not pinging...

I have read many posts where people do experience pinging but set the HPP3 higher and it goes away...
