Metal on metal grinding Noise when starting

2014 Silverado. I recently took it in to get a service and since then My truck has been making a metal on metal grinding noise when starting. It doesn’t  happen every time but when it does it’s bad. Here’s a video to help

Time for a new starter. Nothing big.its just failing to stay engaged due to the weak solenoid/ plunger.

Well I’d consider yourself lucky...I personally know three people with silverados this week that had their trucks towed to the dealer because of starter issues. A 2015 with 35,000 miles, one click no start. A 2018 click no start (15,000 miles). And a 2015 with 70,000 miles, click no start. 
 

I myself had my 2018 with 34,000 miles towed in for a starter over the summer.

 

My coworker with the 2018 is furious. Dealer told him the starter is on back order and they haven’t seen something this bad in 25 years (which I think is an exaggeration). So for you to at least have it be able to start is pretty good. I’ve been told that the starters aren’t sealed tight enough and moisture gets in to some. The replacement starters have an entirely different sound/speed to them. It’s night and day.

I totally agree. The design of the solenoid has changed along with a higher tq motor. When i replaced mine i took the old and new apart to see the differences. The parts are not interchangeable at all. The new one just sounds way better/ more powerful and spins the motor as so.

Good to know, wasn’t sure if it was just a coincidence that it sounded different. Good to know it is different.
