454 Fuel Economy?

Just wondering....I found one that I like out in texas at a really good price. Just wondering what y'all typically get with a 454 unloaded. I'm not as concerned when I'm towing, because I don't have to pay the gas bill then.

We've got a bunch of 1998-2000 Chevy 1 ton dually's with 7.4L's at work. I occasionally drive one, and the mileage I have gotten is 12-13mpg on the highway (all have 4.10 gears), and roughly 10-11mpg around town. I pulled a 5000lb boat on the highway at 75mph and got 10.5mpg average on two separate tanks of gas.

Even though the mileage isn't good, I really do like the Vortec 7.4L.

A coworker has a 1-ton w/ the 454 in it ('97 or '98). He says it gets about 11 Mpg combined. Says it doesn't matter if he's towing or not, he gets 11 Mpg. Said maybe if pulling a max load it'll drop to 10 Mpg, but that's about it.

I have some experience with a 99 3/4 ton suburban with a 454. It got between 10-12 mpg. One trip to central NY, towing a trailer the weighed about 4500lbs through hills, we averaged 7 mpg.

I have heard stories about those years not having the best brakes.
