2008 GMC Sierra concerns

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L LY5, and lately when I fill up and start the truck it doesn’t shift out of park and the brakes are stiff. Then I turn off the truck, start it back up but seems to have problems cranking. This happened for the first time last week and it just happened again today, my truck has 173k miles and is my daily driver. Anyone who has an idea of what’s going on please let me know of any probable causes. Thank y’all so much.

Sounds like a failing purge valve, although those are kind of rare to go bad without the carbon canister exploding.

How mechanically inclined are you?

So you’d recommend me changing out the purge valve and the carbon canister also? I’m going to look more into my truck, and if I find it too difficult I might take it to the dealership or a local shop, but thank you for the feedback. ??

Here’s what you need to do.

Remove the engine cover and you’ll see the purge valve. YouTube it if you are unsure what I’m talking about, it’s a great resource to get started.

Take the line off that goes to the purge valve and shake it. If it sounds like an Indian rain maker and or small black pellets fall out, your carbon canister has come apart and you need to take it to a shop you cannot repair this at home.

If it doesn’t, great! Remove the purge valve and try like hell to blow through it. It absolutely should not allow air through. Blow in either direction and if you can feel air passing through then the seal is weak and it requires replacement.

Hope this helps
