nitrous 8.1 ???

Recommended Posts

I don't know of anyone with nitrous on their 8.1L... but just as a piece of advice... the Allison is a stout tranny, but nitrous creates so much torque even an Allison 1000 isn't gonna put up with much abuse behind nitrous. I would recommend installing a 'window switch' if you install a nitrous system, that way the nitrous is shut off right before the tranny upshifts. This will reduce the power to stock levels while the tranny shifts, and as soon as the tranny finishes a shift, the nitrous will have just started pouring back on again. This will really help save your tranny's clutch bands.

You might see if you can run one of the new 'Nozzle' system nitrous kits. Since the 8.1L uses a dry manifold (only air flows through it, and fuel is added just before the intake runners on the cylinder heads), you may want to avoid adding a wet nitrous system that sprays nitrous and fuel into the 8.1L's dry manifold. The Nozzle system uses jets mounted under your factory fuel injectors, so the nitrous and extra fuel is sprayed in at the same location as your stock injectors spray in fuel.

Just my 2 cents

I run a Nitrous Express wet kit in my S-10 and love it. The install was fairly easy and it is a major kick in the pants. Check out my website for install pics and there will be new dyno charts up there withing the next 2 weeks.

Along with a window switch I would be safe and put in a wide open throttle or WOT switch as well. That way when you arm the system you will only activate it when you are in the set RPM range and when you are at WOT.

As far as kits I would go with a dry shot. Problems with dry kit as with a wet kit is your fuel system. If the stock pump and injectors can't deliver the right amount of fuel your motor won't last.

As americanmuscleman stated dry manifolds are not the best for wet shots. Fuel puddling can accure, and possible back fire. The kit he decribed will not have this problem. But you must make sure that your fuel pump is up to the task.

By next summer I plan to have a dry kit on my car. Nozzle spraying though the MAF letting the computer decide how much fuel to add. I will only be using a 100 shot because that is a little less than the limit of the stock fuel pump and injectors.

Thanks for the advice I think if I do it I'm gonna use a NOS kit and find another manifold so I can drill and tap it to accept 8 fogger nozzles. With this type of setup and having the nozzles as close to the cylinder port as possible I would not have to worry about the "dry manifold" and the kits sold by NOS are very tunable.

And I do like the noszle system but the price would have to come down.
