1995 C/K 1500 transmission

I just got a 95 1500 with a bad trans. From what i understand 95 is a year that is not interchangeable to earlier years and need modification for later years? Also wondering if the 4l60e is good enough to get a refurbed stock one or maybe one a little bit more beefed up. The truck is free from a good friend and labor would be done myself which is why ive thought about getting an upgraded one.
