Attaching Fender Flares

Recommended Posts

I need to attach some used factory flares to my Sub. I was wondering if there were any recommendations for type of double sided tape to use? Also, Where to buy it would be helpful? Thanks for your help.

Not sure as to what kind is best. But I would think if you went to any Autobody shop / paint shop that they could tell you what they use, or even have some you could buy.

just a thought.

That would be my suggestion.

Not to mention that most of the body shops around here would slap them on there for you for a really low price in order to get you to come back to them for other stuff....Door dings, windshield chips, road rash, etc.

3M body sidemolding tape. There are also pin clips that go through the fender edge. If you look you'll see holes in the fender lips that match the flares. It's the same type of pins that are used on the radiator cowl under the hood. Those should be easily had from the dealer. If the auto paint store you going to is full service repair parts/tools, they'll have the pins as well.

I have the pins, I was hoping for maybe an on-line site. There are some paint supply shops in my area, they are just a ways away. I will make sure to get a quality 3M product. Is there any particular thickness?

You don't need to go to a paint supply to get 3m tape. You can get it from Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, or just about any auto parts store....Wal-Mart, Target, and the like as well.

All the double sided tape I saw at the regular stores was quite thick. The residual tape I removed from the back of the flares was very thin (and could be crushed even thinner). I just did not want to put something on that would look bad. I appreciate all your suggestions, I just wanted to make sure there was not a special tape to use.

You're right about the thickness. The 3M Molding tape is fairly thin, as it is also used for emblems. The only draw back about buying it from a auto paint supplier is you have to buy the packaged bulk roll. Also get 3M's adhesive/wax remover to prep the surface you'll be sticking together.

I bought the 3M tape at the local napa store. I think I needed just about 30 feet to attach all 4 flares. Be sure to clean the fenders real well with alcohol first.and attach the tape to the flares first not the fender,(duh). Pretty simple install you won't have any trouble.

I just wanted to thank you for the help in finding the tape. I used a complete 5 yard roll and a very small part of a second. I would guess about 20 ft. The right size tape is 3/8" by .045 thickness. The flares look great and gives the 'burb a much tougher look. :sigh:
