4WD ???

Just now got a call from chevy dealer. They were replacing the transfer case shift mechanism (just a plastic rail and plastic traveller that slides over it) because it was causing a buzzing noise that last year they diagnosed as piston slap. They say the truck has to be rolling to go from 2wd to neutral, 4wd lo or 4wd hi. I could swear I could shift into 4wd while the truck was standing still before????

All the 4wds I have use you had to roll just about an inch after you push the button or move the shifter to get it to actually engage. But I doubt you actually have to be rolling to shift it.

2wd, 4wd High, and auto 4wd, I can engage while the truck sits still. Shifting to 4wd High you can actually feel the front lock in while sitting there.

4wd Low you have to move it a little to get it to engage.

I am really wary of picking up this truck today if it cant shift into 4wd standing still. I am sure it could do it before, I wonder if they screwed something up?? This is the dealership that originally said the buzzing noise was piston slap! I got little confidence in them right now..

Go down to the dealer to pick it up but right before you do it try it on one of there new trucks on the lot. If it shifts in on the new truck and it doesn't on yours then grab that dumb @ss service manager and show him that they do it.

if you read the owner manula you should find that shifting when rolling is the recommended shifting method. that's probably what they're trying to tell you.

Must be moving, just a bit.

New system has electric motor/soleniod that just rams the gears together....most of the time okay, they will mess just enough to slide into each other...but if the gears are aligned for interferance, it continue to try to slam them together.

Why I like the old manual levers, you, the person, could "feel" the gears mess before slamming them home.

Other side of coin is that you can't be moving too fast, as the gears will be moving too fast and will collide

Truely dislike some of the new stuff. More expensive (hear plus $500 bucks just for the transfer case motors, plus labor to install).

The guy on the phone was wrong, when I got down there, the other service guy said "to go into 4wd LO, you have to put the tranny in neutral and shift the transfer case with one continuous movement, dont pause in between. To shift into 4wd HI, you can be rolling or stopped." This is what I remembered, the first guy screwed me up saying you had to be rolling. I read the manual and it also says to put the tranny in neutral for 4wd LO, then move the lever with a continuous movement, nothing at all about rolling. Anyway it is fixed now...knock on wood! :shakehead:
