Myself I take a aspirin when I have a headache. Not because it's time to have a headache.

There are items of maintenance you do to prevent a problem, like changing you oil and filter, rotate tires etc.

There are items you do because somethings service life it over..wiper blades, air filters, bulbs, etc. 

 

There are items that need service because they break when they shouldn't. 

There are items then need service because you've abused the equipment silly and deserve a good beating back.  

 

Then there are items people do because someone is a really good salesman and adept at selling fear, uncertainty and dread.

 

Most of the time a motor that gets the first few and is adult driven will never get the problem 'everyone' fears.
