About to purchase an 88 Jimmy

I have been looking for about 2 weeks now for a vehicle in the $1000-1500 range

 

I found one tonight I am very interested in. It's an 88 GMC Jimmy, red/white paint with red interior, 127k miles, power locks/windows, cd player...

 

Everything works but the A/C, the owner said he had it checked and the mechanic said it loses pressure (bad hoses?)

 

There's a very small oil leak around the back of the valve cover (bad seal?) but that's all that's wrong with it.

 

It starts smooth, it runs smooth, it drives smooth, interior and exterior is immaculate, only thing wrong with the looks is the dark tint in the back is bubbling in some places (easily removable)

 

He wanted $1500, I talked him down to $1200, I plan on giving him a $100 deposit tonight and paying the rest on monday and making the deal final.

 

I have an extra $500 to fix the a/c + the seal. Do you think those repairs will be under the $500 i have?

 

Is it a good truck? Do you think it has a few more years in her? I just need something to commute to work 20 miles away on a daily basis and possibly 60 miles away to see my g/f once or twice a month... Think it'll do me good?

 

Please post your comments. I want some reassurance before I make this purchase. Edmunds.Com rated it at $2500 private party value and he is selling it to me for only $1200 (he just bought a new truck)

PS It has the 2.8l v6 fuel injected engine in it. 4 speed auto.

we had an 86 2.8 and 85 2.8, both 4x4's, , about 8 and 6 years ago. they ran strong with almost no problems, besides suffering from being slightly slow. They were big, heavy, with not a lot of power, but they got the job done, and with little to no problems. The one your looking at should make a great driver. my brother also had a 91 sonoma with a 2.8 and I think he had a 85 S-10 with the 2.8. They ran good too, with little problems.

My mom had an 87 2wd blazer which i drove during HS.  She sold it back in may of 00 when i bought my truck after she got her new blazer.  It had the 4 speed and 2.8 V-6.  Great truck never had any problems EXCEPT the same thing as the one you wanna buy the air conditioner.  My dad would fix it (recharge and fix hoses) and it would work for 6 months then break.  He never put any serious money into it.  Maybe $50 a yr.  We sold it for $1200 (originally $1800) guy talked us down and my mom felt bad about the air not working.  I still see it around every once4 and awhile.  It s a decent truck that should give you very minimal problems

 

BECAREFUL on ice though.  I almost flipped hers (hit a patch of black ice after a blizzard)

well thank you everyone for your opinions/experiences

 

i'm buying it tomorrow night at around 6pm when i get off work =)
