might want to check out the brake light!

my '00 silverado did this - turned out that there was a bad switch under the dash

and i had been riding around with no brake lights and no horn!

I was going to suggest the brake relay also.

?????????? Maybe your "cruze" control disengage switch. Not sure if they are vacuum or electric? worth looking into. You should be able to access it from under the dash.

Are you SURE it's only when you're stopping/starting -- or is it more that you're going slow and can hear it better then?

I think I might have had the same problem -- but it WASN'T behind the cluster at all. (How do I know? 'Cause it bothered me so badly that I REMOVED the cluster and drove around the block with my head practically in the steering wheel trying to hear the noise.) It got no louder or more obvious with the cluster out. If it's kind of a creaking/ticking sound, then you might want to rule out the plastic piece that sits on the windshield under the wipers.

For me, this piece was just a bit loose on the driver's side, and the rubber edge (where it meets the windshield) would make a creaking noise sometimes. I could only be sure that I was hearing it during stopping/starting.

I retightened the bolt holding that side down, and also sprayed a ton of WD-40 under the edge where the piece didn't sit perfectly on the windshield. Believe it or not, either the retightening of the piece and/or the lubing of the piece underneath quieted the creaking.

Oh -- what led me to check this out finally was that I noticed that I COULD NOT hear the noise when it was raining, leading me to finally realize that the rain was acting as a lubricant and quieting the noise.

I hope this helps you (or helps someone)!

I had a clicking in the dash like that once. I looked for about a week trying to find it. Then I noticed that the trip odometer wasn't moving. The main one was working but the trip wasn't. I hit the reset button on the trip and it as never made the noise since. Bugged the crap outta me until I found that.

Just a stupid question, but are you sure there isn't anything rolling around in the ashtray or glove box? (You don't want to overlook the obvious...)

That is how the noise in my steering shaft started. When the truck rocks forward or backward while braking or accellerating, the shaft would make that "pop" or "thump" type of sound. It sounded like it was comming from the dash and I finally figured out what it was.

Just a thought.

Im going to mess with it real soon as the more I think about it, the ticking is driving me nutty! Crazy if you will. Between that & my steering wheel sqeaking I feel like this this is a real POS. Its embarassing to have people ask me why its doing this...
