First of all, the L86 IS an LT1!!!  Secondly, I used the Vette engine only to make a point, which your dyno graph also bears out.  On your chart, torque peaks at 4100 rpm's and then starts to drop.  But wait, the horsepower continues to climb, which is the point.  The L86 is incapable of reaching the Vette redline of 6600.  Ever wonder how Ferrari engines make so much horsepower and yet have relatively (note "relatively") low torque numbers?  Because those engines, like the Ferrari 458 speciale 4.5 liter V-8 makes 510ft lbs of torque at 6250 and 600 hp at 9000 rpm's.  I mentioned that horsepower is a mathematical derivative of torque x rpm's divided by 5252.  Move the torque curve up in the rpm range and even more HP is created.  Sure torque drops off at some point, but HP continues to climb until the torque drop off is so dramatic, the engine runs out of steam.  It all revolves around engine design and what it  is intended to do.  Years ago when Chev brought out their big blocks, the high performance engines had little low end grunt because torque was created in the higher rpm range.  They all were the same size engines, just different heads, intake, cams, etc.

I guess I do not understand what your point is that torque drops of after 4000 rpms and HP at 5800 - 6000.  How then does the LT1 Vette engine (2018) make 460HP?  I believe its torque rating is the same at the L86...460.

Well as soon as I get my LT2 intake and ZR1 throttle body installed I should have all the bottle necks taken care of.  But no matter what drive train loss and weight is still going to hurt us.  But a cammed L86 isn't something to sleep on.

you said the l86 can make the same power as the lt1 if you just rev it out. That is not true, that is my point. 


You don’t need to explain hp and torque to me. The l86 is not making any more hp if you rev it. 

 

they are the same long block, after that they are different, they are not the same engine fully dressed. The intake manifold and exhaust manifold are parts of the engine. That’s why they have different names and hp ratings. The exhaust path and intake path is where the lt1 gets it’s power bump.

 

This is all stuff that has been discussed hundreds of times since 2014.

 

its likely the c7 exhaust and airbox that make the 40hp. L86 intake seems solid.

    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.       
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.  
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
