Pennzoil Conventional 5W-30

I currently have a little over 50K miles on my truck and have always used Pennzoil 5W-30 during oil changes (every 3,000 miles) I am currently using Fram PH3675 filters but plan on changing over to a Bosch or STP. Does anybody else use this type of Pennzoil oil? What should I change to if there is a better kind out there? I don't want to change to Synthetic...

I used to use Castrol GTX only, but I read somewhere on bobistheoilguy that switching brands some isnt a bad thing because it gives your engine a different additive and cleaner package. So I switch around among the major brands some, my dad uses the cheapest oil he can find with the starburst and has had no problems. BTW the local Chevrolet dealer uses Pennzoil Conventional.

Have you seen the prices on conventional motor oils?!!! Close to $1.80/qt for the name brands (Castrol, Pennzoil and others) in my area (Tampa, FL). I purchased a case of Exxon 5w-30 for $13. If I have to choose between spending $2 for conventional and spending $3.50 for synth, I'll buy synthetic.

I have been using conventional Pennzoil for the last 30,000 miles at 3,000 mile intervals. I am now at 67,000 miles.

I'd stick with the Penzoil. It has a lot of Molly in it and that is a good thing.

As mentioned above, BITOG site has a good bit of information on it. Along with that is the used oil analysis section that you can see how different oils hold up in different vehicles over the miles.

Believe it or not but the Super Tech filter from Wal-Mart is a good filter to use. It is way better than the Fram. It is the ST3675. It is made by Champion. If your changing out the oil at 3k then that would be a good filter to go with. Wix is another good brand.

There has been a ton of talk on BITOG on these filters and all those individuals that bought these and cut them open to examine them new as well as with a few thousand miles on them.

As a CASI certified Lube Tech (*twirls finger* Wooo, big man here), I can honestly say that it doesn't really matter what oil you use. Be it $0.99 a quart Chevron oil or $10 a quart Red Line synthetic...as long as you change your oil often, your engine will last a long time.

Personally, I go by when the oil monitor tells me to change the oil in the truck. And I use Mobil 1, just because I'm more comfortable with the margin of safety I have if I go past the usual 3000 miles. In the Corvette, I believe the system is calibrated to allow up to 10,000, or maybe it was 15,000 miles for the oil life index to expire if driving conditions are ideal. I go by time in that car since I don't put alot of miles on it. I change the oil around every 6 months.

Also, as far as the Pennzoil goes. I've heard alot of "this sucks, but this is the one I use" from many, many mechanics and other industry insiders. The name that gets mention the most as "sucking" is Pennzoil. Take that for whatever you want.

Am I the only Valvoline guy here? Regular valvoline for me. I think that penzoil has a high ash content, which is not the best. I called a rep for penzoil and asked how much ash there was in their 5w30/10w30 oil. He said about 1-2%. Valvoline only has 0.8 ash content. You can find this infomation out on any oil maker if you go to their website.
