I have the classic AFM related spark plug fouling issue on my 2010 Silverado 5.3 liter V-8. I already replaced the valve covers with the new ones recommended by GM. I replaced the plugs along with the valve covers 20k miles ago but now the truck is running rough again and the check engine light cam on just like last time. I assume the plugs are fouled again but I haven't pulled them yet. I have read that if I drive the vehicle in manual mode in 5th gear it will de-active the AFM. Is this an acceptable long-term solution? I like the truck but having to replace spark plugs every 20K miles is a total pain in the butt. Thanks.

I have been driving by 2011 180,000 miles in manual 5th gear since I brought new in 2011 and after had any problem with my truck. So yes I recommend you drive it 5th gear.

Or just buy the Range AFM disabler that lets you use all 6 gears with AFM off.

More than likely it didn't foul all the plugs, usually just one or two. Everyone should have a handheld scan tool to help you diagnose simple issues like this. $20-30 for a code reader can save you money in the long run.

Ya, at the bare minimum disable the AFM. I recommend also plugging the oil port that supplies oil to the AFM solenoids, and cutting the gaskets, but that's just me. In addition, you could do is add a catch can.
