Hey all,

 

I have a k2500 suburban with the 454 v8 and 4L80e (first gen I believe since cooling lines are side by side into trans body)

 

I do not have reverse (so could be reverse servo pin) but have heard if no reverse won't have low gear (1st) when shifted manually and seems I have that still.

 

So not sure if electrical issue where linkage connects to electric switch on outside body of trans. Or it's the electrical connections that go into the trans for the solenoids internally. Or it's the actual gears and bands etc inside.

 

Anyone else have no reverse, and hard shift between 1st and 2nd (and sometimes 2nd to 3rd) when in drive?

 

1st to second shifts hard around 2500 RPm or so. Which seems high to me.

 

So I am leaning towards besides obvious issues like solinoid, servo pin etc. That something internally is "binding" the when pressure gets higher then needed it "pops" and shifts.

 

Like when strut bearings bind when turning before the force breaks em free again.

 

Any help or ideas would be great! I havnt dropped pan, changed filter or fluid yet. Or taken electrical connector off side that goes inside (which I know can leak with time and short out connections and cause problems)

I'm having the same problem with the same trans but I still have reverse. I scanned it this afternoon and noticed the new neutral switch I put in is showing the pcm that its in park/neutral no matter what gear its in but not sure if that will cause the shifting problems I have. I had to replace the complete engine/ trans wiring harness and the internal trans harness as well as the neutral switch and it was fine before that. I'm pretty sure my converter is locking as soon as it shifts to 2nd gear causing really hard shift. I really need to take it to a trans shop and have them do a deep scan to figure it out I think, I also had a code for a shift solenoid and the torque converter. I'm positive my problems electrical but you may have more going on where you have no reverse. Any ideas guys?

it doesn't look like we are going to get any suggestions here but my thoughts are you should start by having it scanned with a scan tool that can read trans codes and data and a tech that can interpret what they see. that may not be an easy thing to do unless you go to a trans specialist which around me are pretty scarce

Unplug the connector on the side of the trans. Do you see red fluid? You shouldn't see any fluid at all. The connector is known to crack internally allowing trans fluid into the connector. This will cause a host of issues with shift/ing. 

 

You'll need to drop the pan and replace the wire harness internally. Easy DIY. While in there change both Shift solenoids and turn up the force actuator a 1/2 turn. New fluid and filter as well.

Thanks  I havnt gotten the connector apart yet. Didn't know how and don't wanna break it *laughs*

 

But have the valve body, filter etc out. So will check soon.

 

 

 

Found out tho the check bearings in the valve body had elongated and deformed some of the holes they were suppost to sit in tho. Well in the gasket they did...

 

 

 

So have those parts on order too.

LoL, you can't figure out the connector but you have the valve body apart!  GO Mr Nate

A piece of pipe or a socket that fits over the plug n the side of the trans will release the tangs so the plug can be pushed into the case

    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.  
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
    • I am curious as to how much fluid you put back in the transmission ( assuming you had replaced the filter to compare to my findings ) and then went through the process of warming up the trans before pulling the check plug to drain out the excess and if you measured how much came back out.    I just found it surprising that some claimed a certain amount less fluid being put in and then draining some back out. The attitude of the truck as per if the surface is level and how the trucks stance is would make quite a difference since the check plug is right at the front of the transmission.
