Exhaust Gas Temperature

:P I'm a previous Dodge 2500 Ram diesel owner. I installed a pyrometer and boost gauge and depended upon the EGT reading heavily when pulling steep grades with a heavy load. I am a newbie Duramax owner, but have already been cautioned about overheating the aluminum heads under stressful towing. Has anyone out there installed a pyrometer on the duramax? I know they are available, but when I made a query to the vendor, I was informed that clear directions for installation were not available as was the case with the Dodge. In short, is a pyrometer really necessary for the Duramax? Any help or advise on this matter would be appreciated.

Hi -

I haven’t heard of serious issues with the aluminum heads…injectors are a different story, though. I refer to my pyrometer when towing, but in stock configuration you don't have to have it. I rarely tow with the truck in stock configuration, but when I do, the temps stay within a tolerable range. However, gauges are a must if you add Juice, the Predator, or any other program or module that increases performance. I can easily hit 1500# when making fast runs with my Juice and/or Predator and aftermarket exhaust– rather hot. I installed AutoMeter gauges (boost and pyro). Congrats on the Dmax – you’re really going to like it.

They just installed on of those on "TrucksTV" a few weeks ago. They just drilled and tapped the exhaust manifold on the passenger side for the install.

I added an EGT gauge to my DMAX. I consider it a necessity. Some owners have found stock power levels to yield 1350 degrees Pre-Turbo while towing over 6-7% passes!! So I think an EGT gauge should be on there regardless of stock or enhanced power levels.... Here is a link to an excellant DIY article on drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold:

I also have some pics of my EGT install in my signature..

I installed a pyrometer and boost guage early on so I could keep EGTs in line while towing my ~10,000# fiver. Several times, even with a Banks 4" exhaust, I've seen the EGTs climbing for the sky. I get out of the throtle at 1300 degrees...

I took a ride in a friends D/A Silverado last night. He has the Edge Attitude, 4" exhaust, and an intake.

The Edge Attitude is the one that has the LCD display that lets you monitor several different functions.

One nice thing about it, you can tell it not to let the EGTs go higher than whatever number you dial in, then as the EGTs get clost to that level it will lower the added power so you won't over heat.

That is one extra way to be sure your motor is protected.
