Mudslinging Excuse the pun

 

 

I know that some jeeps are cool....but as far as history...didn't jeep get it's start as a military vehicle....and didn't hummer (or AM General) take over that role???

 

While we're on the subject....what the HELL does "Trail Rated" mean??? Is it actually some sort of real rating system or did jeep just make it up....from now on my HD is "TMF Rated 4 stars" and the Blazer is "TMF Rated 5 stars" Just because it's smaller and has bigger tires.

The original Jeeps (Willys Quad, MA and MB) created a role for the HUMVEE to take over. The "mud slinging" between Jeep and Hummer really revolves around the H2, which is just an ugly ass Tahoe, not the H1 (HUMVEE).

 

As for the Trail Rated thing, it is a gimmick. Trail Rated simply means that the Jeep with the badge has 4WD.

 

Though Jeeps have softened over the years, I will always have far more respect for them than the H2. Jeep has changed, but they have not forgotten their roots and still offer very capable vehicles.

Oh I totally agree...I hate the H2, and the fact that people call them Hummers. It's not a hummer, even if you put a lift on it, it's not a hummer. I have seen some tricked out H2's but I still think it's for trendy soccer moms.....I would know...I have one in my family.

Trail Rated is marketing, nothing more. Same as "GMC - Professional Grade" except GM isn't corny enough to make an emblem for it (thank God) :D

I'm going to have to agree with Paco :thumbs:

 

Jeeps are very capable. They do what they "were" designed for. There is NO WAY an H2 could make it up some of the things I've seen a jeep take.

H2's just look tough. they don't stand a chance against a Jeep Wrangler.

Trail Rated=The vehicle has successfully completed the Rubicon Trail in stock form. Jeep has designed all there vehicles to that standard, even the Liberty. Jeep has recently annouced that they will be soon be doing away with that standard. It's costing them too much money.

So in other words, Jeep isn't going to build their vehicles to endure the Rubicon in stock form? That comment says alot about the direction of the future jeep product - to me it says that the furture jeep could be less of a Jeep.

The statement I read said that not all of the future vehicles will be held to that standard. I really don't know what that means. I'm sure vehicles like the wrangler will still be build to that standard, but future cherokees or libertys might be as rugged as they are now.

well, Hummer is starting to stray, from the offraod accounts we've seen of the H2, and who their market is.....yuppies........

 

but look at the Liberty, I believe it is supposed to be every bit as good off road as the Cherokee it replaced, if not better. and the Renegade is one mean looking small ute IMHO

jeep is going to bring the regular cherokee back out on the market, because sales went down after they discontinued. So now they'll make the cherokees and charge another 5 grand over the grand cherokees by calling them "heritage editions"

 

But you can bet it'll be "trail-rated" :rolleyes:

i dont know.... i followed the H2 thing in truck trend when they took a trip from Alaska all around the u.s it got through alot of stuff with only a flat tire and a broken windshield....

 

i like jeeps alot anyways they are really cool... hopefully i will be able to get a jeep wrangler in the future!

    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
