Violent Power Steering vibration at stop/idle

Hey guys.  2011 Sierra 1500 4WD with just over 200k+ .  I was backing in a trailer and all of a sudden I had a VERY violent vibration when turning the steering wheel.  I immediately stopped and shut it off.  I waited a few minutes and restarted it and there is the faintest groan.  As soon as I touch the steering wheel L or R, the vibration is massive, but not especially noisy in terms of whining.  Fluid level is fine and not cloudy and no CEL.  I've read about possible valves needing changed or filters being cleaned, but never anything with what I describe.  Did the PS Pump simply let go or should I look for something else?  I don't want to spend a day throwing parts at it.

Welcome to the Forum! How's the belt and hoses? you might want to have a helper turn the wheel while you watch the belt for signs of slipping.  Is the pump securely bolted to its bracket? Have you jacked it up to see if anythings binding? If all that checks out my guess would be the pump is bad

Thanks for the reply and the welcome, Richard!  The belt is fine.  Fairly new with no slippage and the hoses appear fine.  No cracks, dry rot or leaks.  But that's not to say someone hasn't clogged one I suppose.  I am able to tur the steering shaft back and forth form under the hood while the truck is running and the slight movement in either direction causes the vibration and it's certainly felt in the hose.  The sound even changes when you remove the PS reservoir cap which makes me think it's the pump itself.  I just wanted to see if there were other things I should look at before replacing.

I had a 2006 Silverado 4X4 with 5.3L engine. It had a device called a "power steering control valve" that fit somehow on the steering shaft. It's purpose was to boost the power steering when sitting still and it was hard to crank the steering wheel over and then reduce the boost when you got up to speed.

 

It worked fine when it was working but when it went out is was a bear to crank the steering over either right or left.

 

You might look into that

Thanks but it doesn't appear to be on the 07-13 models.  I'm just going to go ahead and change the pump and hope that's all.

These trucks still have a steering wheel position sensor too. Just a thought.

Thanks, I looked into that too, but it doesn't seem like the issue.  Gonna change the pump and hope that's all.

My son and I swapped out the PS pump yesterday and all is right with the world again!  That was a weird one though!  I've had PS pumps fail, but never had symptoms like that and certainly never without warning.  I appreciate the responses and support from you all!

      Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.

      Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?

      Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.

      Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.

      I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
