Infotainment, one touch screen off

I've searched the manual and the system but cannot find a quick way to turn off the display. This missing "feature" is not confined to my truck. I've owned and own several vehicles with on-board touchscreen displays. All of them are missing a means of turning off the display with a single press. In my way of thinking this is an oversight by many manufacturers simply because having the means to do this would make for a safer process. Having to dive into two or more menus and make multiple selections in order to simply turn off the screen is not the best or safest way of using the system.

Anyone else like to see this as a standard feature of these types of displays? Maybe GM is listening?

A physical button to turn off the display or the entire infotainment system would definitely be nice. I think one of the newer Chevy vehicles have it - maybe the traverse.

Our Subaru has a button to turn off the "infotainment". My truck has a button to mute the sound. Of the two I like the mute better. But if both had a dedicated, or a configurable soft switch on the screen to simply turn that off, that would be the ultimate. As it is I have to go into settings, choose display, and then turn it off. Two extra steps during which my eyes are not on the road. A choice on the mainscreen, or a configurable one on the side where the other options are, well that would be a much safer option than either vehicle, or any that I've owned has had, among Toyotas, Subarus and Chevys.

In my '20 LT I hold the power button for 1-2 seconds and it turns off the display. See if this works for you.

2023 manual

I've found -- 

 

Press power button - MUTE - screen displays whatever it was showing, but also indicates volume is 'off'

 

Press and hold power button -- OFF -- IIRC the screen  will show temp (or something) against a black background

 

Turn display off but leave radio on -- I haven't found that one.

I'll give these a try guys, thanks. Display off is all I'm looking for. I don't use the radio, only bluetooth so maybe that will make a difference. I'll report back on it.

Also try pressing the 'home' button.

Won't turn it off, but it may be less distracting than the display it puts up when turned 'off'

Well sadly, pressing and holding the volume button turns of the entire infotainment center.

 

All it would take is the ability to create a shortcut to either the Home screen, or the Shortcut Tray to the left of the screen. Both of those can be rearranged, and you can remove and add items to the Shortcut Tray, but only from those that are present on the Home screen itself.

Like I said, in the interest of safety this seems like it would be a no-brainer as an industry-wide standard on all Auto screen systems. I remember back when I was a young man insurance companies would charge more if you had an aftermarket stereo installed in your car. Same type of reasoning here. We should not text while driving of course. Nor should we be navigating into two or three menu levels to get to something so basic as an off and on switch for the display. Just my $.02

I'm with you. Sometimes at night, I want to listen to tunes but just want the interior as dark as possible for driving including turning the display off. It would be nice if there was a quick button to do that, instead of navigating 8 menus deep to do so.

I misunderstood.

I thought you were looking for a way to shut it the centre stuff off, not just the screen.

 

 

If it's a quick way to home screen you want to go to the home screen, press the 'home' hard button.

It's right below the power button/volume knob.

 

 

I usually have the centre screen on audio.

 

I turn down the brightness on the dash at night -- but agree that it would be nice to be able to have zero light from the centre screen when desired. 

Dash illumination isn't very handy on these trucks either.

Yeah, just want to turn the display off. Or at least get it down to the digital clock and a black screen behind it, just as you do when you navigate to Settings->Display->Display Off. Even in daytime. I don't much at night anymore so I don't know about the affect of the screen, or the dash lights on the eyes when it's dark outside.

 

Nonetheless I do appreciate you trying to help.

A little older thread but if you hold down the power button- all will turn off. You can then turn the volume knob to restore audio while keeping the main screen iff

 

it does still show Temp and time/date. I would prefer the clock larger than the temp but oh well

Thank you very much Chris, this works like a charm! Haven't tried it in our Subaru yet but in the truck it is exactly what I needed/wanted.

      My truck is a ¾ ton but my placard also says 80 for the rear tires, I think I might have the upgraded suspension to the 3500 series maybe.   I put my air down to 60 and the light was still on, and there was no way I was putting over 60 psi in the rear empty and not towing because I knew the actual number Toyo gave me and I didn't wanna ruin the center of my tires!   And you actually can change it in the settings from metric or is and it will show kph or mph then when you go into your tire settings it will be either psi or kpa, but it would be nice to just change it directly on the tire psi page

      Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".

      I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
